I'm so happy about this I had to share it. Barrett 98B Fieldcraft 6.5 Creedmoor. The standard barrel length is 22" but I had this one cut to 18". I know that's short for this cartridge but I just don't care. It is handy enough that I can actually get the rifle where I want it to be. It is exactly 12 POUNDS as pictured. Yes, with suppressor and scope. I love it.

I've only zeroed it at 100m but it is making 1 hole groups with the Hornady 120 AMAX loads and running about 2750fps. The 140 factory AMAX load goes 2550. I'm kinda done with long barrels.

Great looking rifle!

Look forward to more reports when you stretch it out.

Very cool, congrats. Is it going to be a range toy or do you plan to carry it in the field?

Interesting.

Looking at some ballistics tables, the difference between your 18" barrel (140 @ 2550) and a more typical "long" barrel (140 @ 2950) is worth about 225 yards.

The stated velocity on the Hornady 140 AMAX load is actually 2710 and the ones I have chronographed in 24" barrels are barely doing that, so the gap is a much smaller. About 150 fps.

"Looking at some ballistics tables," eh? Wow, I wish I'd thought of doing that before now! I'll bet I could've saved myself four decades of actually shooting schidt to figure things out. TFF.

Edited to say... Rock on, Tennessee. Enjoy your new rig. Just don't consult ballistic tables as you might be disappointed.

What's the sarcasm about, did you have a bad day? frown

Or are you just trying to point out you're too old to learn anything from a drop chart?

I shoot stuff to figure things out too, FWIW. My 2950 fps number came from other people shooting the Creedmoor though, I don't have one, but am interested in reading about what they can do, whether that's long or short barrels. Not bashing the OP.

2950 with 140's in a Creedmoor? In what, a 32" barrel on the moon? Not realistic. Figure 2850 in anything under 26", and brass that holds primers for 3 firings. No, I'm not guessing.

Tennessee: That Barrett is rad. I'm with you on short barrels, last build was 19" and with a can I'll never go longer again.

Interesting...was thinking of building one with a 16.5" barrel so I can run it suppressed. Glad to hear the velocity was as good as you said.

Yeah, there's not alot that a 140 Amax launched at 2550 can't kill cleanly.

I killed two does with the 140 AMAX last season at approximately 2600 mv out of a 20" brrl. It acted like a regular old hunting bullet. I let my buddy use the rifle and he killed two with the 120 AMAX. The autopsy results where indistinguishable.

Neither left blended internals like a ballistic tip, just a nice wound channel with big bleeding exit.

I think a 130 Accubond is going to be great in this cartridge.

Nice rifle OP.

FWIW, Bob Swagger uses the 6.5x47 heavily, dumped a large buck at almost 500 yds, on that day his rifle was a 16.5"...and a 136gr.

Speed and energy take a backseat IMHO to placement and proper bullet for anticipated need - to get penetration to vitals w/expansion. Amax work well at slower speeds.

OK finally got this rifle pointed at some doe. 200 yards and I caught a bullet, 120 AMAX. It acts a lot like a "hunting bullet"....

A classic Volunteer State November Blue Plate Special. The Creed appears to be a just right bite at 200 paces. Good shooting and great tablefare!

Gotta get me a suppressor!
