Does anyone have any recommendations for what type of external flash I should get for my Nikon D7000?
I have never used an external flash before, but I have some experience taking pictures and I think I know what I want.
Mostly, something that I can direct and bounce the light when I am taking photos indoors.

We currently have a Tamron 18-270mm PCD lens, but the f/3.5-6.3 seems a little lacking and lagging on focus for on certain light situations indoors and kids playing.

Eventually we will get a better lens for closeups, but currently having the versatility of the lens zoom range is important.

Thanks!

I think most any flash that will tilt and rotate will do the trick for you. Looking at Nikon gear, I started with a SB600 because it did what I wanted and it was the most economical. It still does a fine job for me, and especially when the flash is mounted on my camera and I'm indoors. I also have the SB700. For your use I don't know if the 700 would give you any better light, but for my purposes, it sure is nicer to use. The controls are way better. I often mount multiple flash units on light stands for my photography and the 700 makes that process easier for me. If you just want to mount on your camera and start clicking, I'd say save your dollars and go with the most economical Nikon that tilts and rotates, or find an equivalent 3rd party unit and save a little more.

Thanks a lot,
I will look it up. Definitely not needing professional grade equipment, but I prefer to spend in good quality and features than have to spend again.
Tilting head (to bounce off) and ability to control slave flashes or remotely trigger should be more most of what I need.

I've got two SB600's. My D70 has a mode called 'commander". I put it in that mode and raise the flash on the camera and it will fire both flash's remotely. I can get back well out of flash range and set them up in range and fire both, neat flash!

That 18-270 lens is supposed to be a good lens. I have an older 28-200 Sigma that works very well on my D70.
