308, Out to 1000 yards, mainly a range toy, possibly some hunting.

Swfa 12x, vortex viper 6.5-20x44, viper pst second focal plane 4-16x50, viper hs-t 6-24x50

All of those are 300 to 500 bucks, what would you recomend.

There isn't a scope in the sub $700-800 range that will touch a SWFA. The Vortex's that you listed are junk and will give you problems. Nikon doesn't make a scope that even rates a second glance..

SWFA by a mile, though I'd go no higher than 10x.

I bought the Vortex HS-T and it set atop a rifle for less than a week. The SWFA 10x is now back on the rifle.

For me it was SWFA by a mile!

Ok if ss is better do I go 10x or 12x? If the glass is good enough I will likely go 12x.

In my opinion the 10x offers advantages out to 1000 yds.

2muchgun,

I finally got mine to move and it seemed fine until my next outing. At 500 yds in a custom I have I was getting about a 9" horizontal spread. I put the SS 10 back on and groups came right back in to 2 1/2- 3"

I've been around quite a number of SS and have yet to see one with an issue.

Regards,
Shod

Wow. That's a lot.

I was just thinking. My rifle was zeroed at 200 yds. So I was actually losing 1.25" in 400 yds....

Bryant: Keep your eye out for a used Leupold 6x18 variable scope with the fine Du-Plex reticle.
These scopes have an adjustable objective and in my experience (I have several of them) they are very dependable/reliable.
If you intend on "spinning" the adjustments for the different ranges you can send the scope back to Leupold for addition of target turrets for not to much dough.
Best of luck to you with whichever you choose.
