I have a box of the Sierra 90 grain varmint bullets I am going to load up. Are there better bullets for fox and yotes?

That oughtta do it. At least you won't have to waste much time picking them up....

That would be total waste of a fox pelt. Shoot something smaller or leave 'em for others to hunt.

If a .270 is your only rifle then look at the Barnes 6.8 or .277 TTSX in 95-110gr and keep the velocity slowed down a little. You'll get two holes in your pelts but that's better than turning a beautiful pelt into sloppy scrap.

If you're worried about the hides, I would recommend some Barnes solids.
But......I just looked on their website, and a bunch of their solids have been deemed to be "Armor Piercing" projectiles by the ATF! Dumb! So they are currently unavailable while Barnes seeks an exemption.

Loading your current bullets down to 2500 fps or so, or especially a Barnes TSX or TTSX started at a similar speed, will help considerably.

If you don't want the hides , then use the 90 gr Sierra . The best varmint bullet in the 270 is the Hornady 110 BTHP. Very few Varmint Bullets out there, that will kill Foxes and not destroy the Pelt regardless of cal. Varmint cal for Foxes start and end with the 17's

When I was a young pup and didn't have a safe full of rifles, a trusty .270 was my only centerfire rifle.

I tried some of those Sierra 90g HP and found the accuracy was missing and the longer range performance was shaky.

I then returned to the 130g Nosler BT which was made for the .270 and has proven itself over and over again in the field. Accuracy went back up and extended range performance was outstanding. I viewed it as practice for the big game season and learned how that load performed at all distances and angles.

Let's say I was not a hide hunter. Although I did hunt for hide on one 150 yard broadside shot on a coyote and wasn't all that successful in finding anything. Even more so for foxes, although they didn't seem to have all the needed body weight to absorb all the energy.

I would suggest trying out your big game load and view it as practice.

I'm puzzled by your response. Perhaps you eat your coyotes and foxes up in the north areas.

We consider them varmints, as in varmints. Simple.

I got started hunting coyotes with my Honda CR500 motorcycle, in the winter when the pelts were prime me and a couple of my buddies would go to our secret honey hole and get about 4 to 8 coyotes every time we went.

One year my friend told me he was getting too old to chase them on dirt bikes anymore and wondered if I would go with him and try out his new Johnny Stewart cassette tape caller, I loaded up my trusty 270 with some Sierra 90 grainers and we went hunting.

Very first stand we had 2 coyotes come in both were pups, my friend shot one with his 223 and a split second later I shot my first coyote with the 270 at about 40 yards.........it blew it completely in half.

Long story short, I was hooked on calling coyotes but NEVER used a 270 again

One nice thing about using the lighter varmit bullets in such rounds as the .270 or, in my case the .280, is that one can develop very accurate, mild kicking loads that shoot very close to the zero for your big game loads. Try developing such loads with H or IMR 4895 powder. I've found that even TAC works well in my .280 with the 110 gr. Speers. E

Perfect. The greenies get lead outlawed and the ATF gets monos outlawed. They just never quit do they?

IMR 3031 with the 90g Sierra will make you think that you are shooting a varmint rifle the accuracy is in the extreme, tiny, tiny groups.

I just love to see that hair fly'en on coyotes. If of course, you want to save the pelts, then you may get only half a pelt.

For years and years, the Sierra 90gr hp was my go to squirrel killing - coyote strafing - load in my one and only rifle...

That little bullet shoots like its "target grade" in several .270's we ran it in. Nice tight groups and little recoil smile

My coyote killing was on a sheep ranch and we couldn't have cared less about the hides..... Spring time was the best shooting, when the new lambs had dropped.

If you want to keep the pelts, you should look elsewhere for that.

How much 3031 are you using and what are you getting for FPS?
I'm thinking I need to try this.
