I asked the guy at my local gun shop this same question a few weeks ago. He has worked there for years and they've always stocked a lot of Marlins. He told me things have improved from when Remington first bought Marlin but estimated it was still a 50/50 proposition on getting a decent one. The ones I've looked at recently have run from "not too bad" to "I can't believe they actually shipped this".

the fit and finish seems to have improved but they all have that remington 870 express feel to them. dull matte finish, crappy looking laminate, etc. not my cup of tea anymore. i still would not buy any i could not check out thoroughly in person. and the price they are asking is more than you can get a nice JM gun for, so why bother?
