Barnes TTSX in .223 with 1-12" twist.

Have you loaded these in a .223? Thinking about trying some.

If so what kind of accuracy did you see and terminal performance of coyotes?

Any recipes appreciated. (For loads, not coyotes. grin)

Thanks,

twofish

Im using them in a .223AI....currently shooting 55 grainers, which everyone tells me wont stabilize....H335 is the powder that gets the speed, and I expect that would apply to plain vanilla 223 as well.

Prior to this I was using the 50 gr. TTSX ( in case you are worried about the 55 not stabilizing) It was real easy to get it to shoot and I killed a bit of game with it, but only one coyote. Little hole in...little hole out.

It killed deer and antelope just fine out to 300 yards ( the longest I wanted to attempt...)

I wouldn't hesitate to use either on whatever you want to point it at.

Thanks ingwe,

Been working all day and just got back to the computer. I have used the TTSX's extensively in larger bores and had great results with accuracy and killing power.

Seems like a 120 Barnes hits like a 140 anything else.

That is why I was thinking about the .223 TTSX's on Yotes. Figured if I can get them to shoot they should have no problem with shoulder or quartering shots and etc.

Based on your experience with deer and antelope I certainly should be good to go.

Thanks again for the reply.

Be aware your coyotes don't just bang flop...the mono metal doesn't transfer energy like a cnc bullet. My sample of one ran about 40 yards....

Thanks, I understand that. Don't have to worry about penetrating bone or shoulder though. cool

I ran some tests this weekend in my NEF single shot 1:12 twist 223. I could only get my hands on the 53gr version as I am looking for a deer killer not the prairie dog version. I loaded several different powder charges of H335 and was not real impressed at the range. Following the book I have, shows max load at 25 grains so that is were I stopped. But velocity was fairly sedate compared to the 60 grain Nosler partitions I had loaded. Accuracy was ho hum for me as well. Granted the gun only has a 2x7 scope on it so that is part of the group thing, but I could do no better than 2" and those were the lower end loads at 2800-2900 fps. The max load I only got one reading of three on the chrony, and that was 2989 fps with 25 gr charge, where the 24.5 grain charge was 3067, so not sure what was going on there. I was able to get 1.5" groups with the Nosler bullets clocking an average 3144fps over a dozen shots. I may try the 50 or 45 grain bullets to see what I can make happen there. Looking for accuracy and speed for 80-120# whitetails for my daughter to shoot. She is small and 8 years old. Will be 9 before next season. So far the Nosler wins.
