I did not know there was any difference between the three. AFAIK, and I could be wrong, each of them is merely a 284 Win case necked down to 6.5 aka 264 diameter. No changes to the case body, shoulder or neck to any of them that I ever heard of.

I will be staying up with this thread to see if there is a difference that I was not aware of.

I think the rear diameters are different (at least) and the original 6.5-284 Win chamber dimensions have a larger size at the rear compared to the case size due to the original actions the parent .284 cartridge was chambered in; M88 and M100 Winchesters. Long range bolt shooters found they wanted to tighten up the rear of the chamber to avoid loosened primer pockets.

If you are building on a short action then the Winchester version. You won't be able to seat 140 VLD's.

Long action go with the Norma.

Only difference is bullet seating depth.

Would choose reamer based on what brass you have. If you have Lapua brass go with a Lapua reamer. Make sure it is throated to action.

My first chamber was for win brass minimum specs. needed custom dies win brass. Right now I am sorting used brass that cases are to large
in the base to fit shellholder.
Do a search 6.5 X 284 differences Lapua , Win , Norma

KK alaska i is right. But then I had an action that would accept both brands of brass.

I used Lapua but could neck down Win (white box) 284 brass too.

What kind of barrel life could a guy expect if he kept the barrel on the cooler side?

Unsure on barrel life, but if I had to do it all over again I would do a 6.5 06 on a LA.

I was thinking a Defiance XM action would be just right for length!

Mine is a 6-284 Win. It is chambered with a Win reamer. But since Win brass is darned near impossible to find, I wish it had been chambered with a Norma reamer.

I am using 6.5-284 Norma brass manufactured by Hornady.

I Have my own reamer and can use any brass out there. I decided that I wanted the existing resizing dies to work with my base diameter and I throated it for 140 VLDs. My reamer is not the best one for a short action though. There are reamers with longer throats than mine too. Neck diameters are all over the place as well. I like .298" for the necks. This is a reasonable no-turn neck. I mostly use Lapua brass. The Hornady brass is not as good. Most W-W brass is not as good either.

I used a 6.5x284 for a number of years in LR competition. 48.5 grs of N160 and a 142 Sierra was the cats ass but never got more than 750 accurate rounds out of a barrel. Usually shot 24-26 rounds in 22 minutes.
