The good old days seem to be gone forever for beautiful wood on the # 1's.
At this point, I'm just grateful they are still making #1's.
And glad I have the ones I do.

Beautiful wood for sure! But, my newer, UGLY WOOD #1 in 45-70 is a shooter and a keeper. It is more accurate than I am and if I scratch it in the field, I'm OK with it. Some of the wood in the above pictures would be hard for me to take hunting in the bush.
Start young, hunt hard, and enjoy God's bounty.

This big guy has decent wood on it. Not great, mind you, but pretty decent. .475 Turnbull, less than 100 made, is what I was told by Turnbull. It shoots, too:

I hate the 2X4 wood they put on No.1's lately. Like this 2005 RSI in 7X57. And this 2009 Medium Sporter in 9.3 X74R.
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer but how he hunted it.

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum. I do tend to fit in well wherever I go in person. The campfire is the most outside exposure I get. No TV, no newspaper.

Sweet! Nice to find black pad guns with good wood I won (or more accurately, paid a lot for) an auction for some Bee brass, so at least I can try out the .218.

1976 200th year No.1B 270 Red Pad with 14 rounds up the spout that I bought here yesterday for less than a new one. This is #7 with 3-4X wood No 1s and one tang safe 77 270 3X fiddleback.

Some beautiful wood here.. In the 80's I bought sight unseen a 6mm # 1... It was awesome!! I kept it for several years then traded it or sold it.. In those years, money was tight, and if I wanted something I usually made a trade or sold something.. STUPID MOVE.. Nice wood is tough to get...

Really, I guess you didn't look close enough. No I won't give you link to it unless you give me the link to the AH fore-end that I must have missed.
Being a gentleman, I'm sure you'll be happy to do that.

If you want an extra special No. 1 you have to go to a specialist. They are not cheap, but not that much more than the typical new black pad. http://www.classicsportingarms.com/

This is what you wrote. I went back and looked for a Ruger No.1B "1976 200th year red pad .270" and there was NONE! I went over a 24 hour period in the classifieds and there was nothing. So,if you bought here "yesterday" where is the ad? Why is not in the classified, cause I looked for it? Did you really buy it or just "copy & pasted" a pic from somewhere else and claim it as your own? So,where did you get this Ruger No.1? And I really doubt you even own it,as in the past you use pics from other sites as your own. Also, how can a single shot have 14 rds "up the spout?" Also,I told what I found, one ad for a Ruger No.1 .30-06 and another for a Ruger No.1 fore-end.

I am here because I am following the site rules and Mr. Bin gave me another chance. IF there is a 30-06 No. 1 and a fore-end for sale, why is everyone afraid to give me the links ? As soon as you send them, I'll send you the link to the 270 I just bought. As for the rifles not being mine, I believe that horse has been beaten to death and you will not bait me into breaking Mr. Bin's trust. 450/400 restocked with buttstock off 1976 458 and 450/400 fore-end both redone in English red. Moa rifle with NEI .411 cast bullets. Note rare Unertl white dot Hawk with click adjustments. You know where I live and I would be happy to show any of you the rifles if you wish. best to you and yours, Larry

A real .270 Liberty #1: Both it and the .475 Turnbull I posted earlier did make an appearance at the last Quemado Gathering. I actually did show up and meet people. It shoots well, too. I took it hunting last year as a backup. I checked zero at 50 yards, and it put three into one hole. And I do mean one hole. At 50 yards with the Loopey turned up to 10x, I could see only one hole after three shots. Concerned, I moved the POA about an inch, and a 4th hole appeared an inch away. I may bring it to the Hog Hunt, just to annoy .270 haters

Also get off your butt and search the classifieds for the Ruger No.1 .30-06. That's how I found it.

The .475 has pretty nice wood, and it is the most accurate big bore have ever seen. So far I have 500's up to 1975 fps out of the .475. It has about 5% less case capacity than a .458 Win, but a very long throat, so I am hoping to reach 2100 fps. At that point it's solidly in .470 Nitro class. It also weighs a hair over 9 lbs, with the scope & mounts.

You sir are an iron man. For that kind of horsepower the Brits use a standing bench rest so you can roll with the recoil. SSK says they will make you a 600 Nitro on a No. 1 !

Really have no use for yet another 06' but I did just buy a really nice Black Pad ANIB, right here, for less than any new one. It's also a 7mm remmag w/a 26" bbl. I'm not taking the bait anymore, I'll just keep buying nice No. 1s from the gentlemen on this site. best to you and yours, Larry

My modest collection of No. 1s. All were red pads except the 450/400 which was restocked with a 1976 458 stock that had been dipped in spar varnish. A big job but worth it. 300 H&H was a 30-06 1B that got changed, sights, BB and an AH fore-end. The 2 with pads were not cut and I still have the red pads for them. Just bought two more here this week from nice gentlemen.

Very nice wood on all of them! I can see you follow the adage, "Life is to short to hunt with ugly guns."
I'm thinking it is getting close for me to take a new No.1 group photo.
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer but how he hunted it.

I am "still here" because I am following Mr. Bin's rules on site behavior.
It is unfortunate that a few (very few) of you cannot follow them as well.
As for being a liar ..... well the No.1Bs in 270 and 7mm Rem Mag are on the way. I'll be sure to post photos of them when they arrive for your edification.
May I suggest you go back and read the post describing what Bill O'Reilly said about "haters" ?
best to you and yours, Larry Root

That one certainly does have a very figured fore-end-end. Most No. 1s have very plain fore-ends, even the ones with exhibition level buttstocks. My 2010 production .300 H&H has very nice wood. The fore-end has a straight grain and is quite typically plain. I have a Boddington in .450 NE on its way to me. Looks to have fairly plain wood. I only have the store's stock image of that one:

Nice. I'd like to have one of the .450 Nitros, but I have only seen one I can recall that had good wood.

One of the Boddington series in .450 NE. Definitely not like many of the rifles posted in this thread, but still nice.
