I read The thread below By Jordan about performance on elk but I am interested in reviews and experience using this bullet for deer.
I hunt with a 7mm Remington Magnum mostly over Agri fields .
shots could come anywhere from 50 to out past 500 yards.
I try as much as possible to shoot for getting at least one shoulder.
Curious for experience from those who have done it what is going to happen if I shoot a 200 plus pound Whitetail buck in the shoulder at short range( 50 to 100 yards)? Is it going to blow up on shoulder with no penetration to speak of or ??
I assume it is as good as it gets for 400 Yard plus shots expansion wise?
My deer hunting is over for the year just planning for next year and very curious and interested in this bullet for whitetail hunting.

Thanks
Craig

I've used them on deer the last 3 years and performance as been very similar to the Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Mule deer. 7WSM. 162 AM 3112fps launch. 40 yards. Broadside through shoulder blades. Exit shown. Very little to no meat loss.

Thanks Jordan
I was under the impression that if they expanded well at 500 yards that at 50 they would blow up on a shoulder of a big whitetail.
However From the info you have given on your thread and this info it sounds like it may be a great bullet for all around deer hunting, from short ranges to long range.

Thanks again
Craig

I use to use those in my 7mm, I shot a buck at 240ish yards and it destroyed the insides bullet did not exit but was stuck on the hide in the other side, the following week my buddies little brother shot a buck at 650 yards with my rifle and it blew a baseball size exit hole in him. Last year I shot my buck about 70 yards away with them and he was dead before his head hit the ground. this year that same buddy shot a deer at 850 yards with the amax out of a 7mm with a huge exit hole as well and his brother also shot a buck at 400 same gun no exit though, found it in the hide opposite side. everything had serious internal trauma though, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot them from 50-1000 on deer .... I wouldnt use them on elk though, I'd want something that holds together better

I quit using them for a couple reasons and none have to do with performance. During the stretch where bullets and powder was impossible to find hornady quit manufacturing those for awhile to keep up with stuff in higher demand and I couldn't find any. I was in sportsman's today and they had probably 7 boxes but during the bullet shortage I find a 500 box of 168 bergers and bought those and probably have 450 left I need to burn up. I also Bought a 300 RUM this year so I really don't shoot my 7mm much and through the RUM you can't beat the BC of the 230 bergers

Honestly the amaxs shot better out of my 7 and where easier to work a good load for I'll probably go back when I burn up these bergers

So what you're saying, Spdrman, is that you'll have a big 338 in a year or two, because .419 G7 is unbeatable!

Haha probably won't see this guy with a 338 anytime soon, I'm actually considering building a lightweight 7mm I don't like the weight of my RUM and don't want to shoot 230's out of a sub 9lb gun so probably going to do a 7RUM and shoot 180 bergers through it

I've been tossing around a WSM throated for the 180's, in a std length action, for a long time. I read that there's a node at about 3025-3050, and the WSM would get me to it.

I'd be leery of a 180 at 3050 out of a 7 WSM, assuming it had a barrel of sane length. 28" might get ya' there though...

That seems pretty stout to me too. If I can get them running 2850ish it' ll be UBER. Let us know how that turns out HS.

Used my 162s/ 7 WSM on a couple jobs last year with impressive results on WT. The 2-3 under 200 yards were neck shot and remainder just however I could get a bullet into the vitals. 5-6 were shot 6.5 bills + and I had complete pass throughs with hard quartering shots that entered the point of the shoulder and exited read hams, flanks etc.

Like Jordan's report... I was impressed by how far they "dig".

Yes, not a stalking barrel length. I was thinking 27". And in a std action that allows seating out to lengths well beyond 3". And yes, still running right at the top of SAAMI pressure. 3050 is fairly straight-forward with the right set-up.

I whacked a freezer pleaser buck at ~285 yards this fall out of a saum and recovered just the jacket. It isn't a TSX but it did just fine. I posted about it with pics here: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth.../9355238/162_Amax_experience#Post9355238

Not to hijack bcraig's thread but would like to know users that have used the Amax pre-Amp jacket and with the Amp jacket if they have seen any difference in performance.

I have used the pre-Amp jacket Amax bullets with good success for deer sized game but I rarely find anything but pieces of them internally. Never killed anything under 260 yards with them either.

I think I would prefer the bullet lets go once inside and expend all its energy rather than punch through without expanding. But it needs to make it past the shoulder/ribs/etc into the important parts.. I have no experience with the homogeneous bullets but I've heard too many "penciled through" type stories to be a fan.
