December 18, 1944 - The ships of Task Force 38 found themselves in a fight for their lives when Typhoon Cobra overtook the force (seven fleet carriers, six light carriers, eight battleships, 15 cruisers, and about 50 destroyers) during their attempt to refuel at sea. The ships were operating about 300 miles east of Luzon. Many of the vessels were caught near the center of the storm and buffeted by extreme seas and hurricane-force winds. Approximately 790 officers and men were lost or killed, with another 80 injured. Iowa reported zero injured sailors as a result of the typhoon, but suffered a loss of one of her float planes, and damage to one of her shafts. The damaged shaft required Iowa to return to the US, and she arrived at San Francisco on 15 January 1945, for repairs. During the course of the overhaul Iowa had her bridge area enclosed, and was outfitted with new search radars and fire-control systems.

IIRC, Halsey was the fleet commander and he intentionally sailed into the typhoon loosing the men. He should have been court-marshaled but the Navy didn't want the negative publicity that would have resulted.

I read a book (forget name) about 15 years ago that described the events and the lack of fallout.

I remember seeing footage of a big American ship with the whole bow section broken off of it by a hurricane...still making headway in rough seas under its own power.

Interesting........we had a hard time for a while in that War.

If we live long enough, we all have regrets. But the ones that nag at us the most are the ones in which we know we had a choice.

We would have lost, but for the Grace of God and Divine intervention. Many in the conflict saw the unexplainable events that saved us from freakish, unexplained weather interventions to the miracle of breaking the German code devices.

not that typhoon, but I lost an uncle who went down with his ship, in a Typhoon off the coast of Japan in October of 1945...

he had joined in 1941, and went thru the entire war, seeing a lot of action ( like most of the crew on the ship), only to go down after the end of the war.... there was only one survivor from his ship...

Part of war, can't blame Halsey any more than you can blame Macarther who ordered the action.

And probably wouldn't find a more loved man amongst his men throughout the entire war.

Old History channel video, about 50 min.
