Anyone ever made a barrel vise bushing out of acraglas or similar compound? Got to take off a small diameter barrel and my smallest bushing is too large. Any tricks I should know before I try this?

Thanks,

Jordan

I've used body putty to fill in to the barrel contour, no reason acraglass wouldn't work. Do the normal release agent and cast it right where you want to grip.

I have made them out of steel bed, I believe you get better compression strength. as the others have said just cast it where you want to grip the barrel.

I use steel bed as well. Then I use powder resin as a gripping aid. I try to cast as close to the action as I can but it's not always possible. The larger diameter gives more surface area to grip.

I've got some Wiping Solder,.....it's a "Cerro-Alloy" , very much like Brownells Cerrosafe.

I've made up several mold blocks, and can dam the pour with cardboard or file card stock.

....poured over a bit of rosin, this holds like nobody's business, AND is reusable, as opposed to casting resins..

I use it to hold oddball shapes in the mill vise, too. Just keep your work piece reasonably cool. whistle

Lead can be used to pour a bushing also but is more hazardous than cerrosafe. Use above mentioned methods

I have a large and a small aluminum bushing and line it with a thin lead sheet - has worked for every size I have needed.

I wrap the barrel where I am going to clamp with several layers of tape and then the lead squeezes out and shapes to the contour.

Tape peels off with no marks on the barrel. If there ever is a mark - it is lead and can be cleaned off with bore cleaner.
