For those of you who have experience with the chambering in a bolt action, does the standard SAAMI throat-length really need more than a typical 2.82" magazine in a Model 700? Judging from some factory A-max ammo I've looked at, the throat appears to be pretty long on most factory rifles. I've given thought to doing one on a 700 next year and have a 2.99" Wyatt's extended box on hand that my smith could install if need be. Bullets of choice would likely be the Scenar or the LRAB. Just a 22-23" varmint-style build if I wind up going for it.

JPro, my gunsmith says he can do it on a standard SA Remington no problem. He says he has built forty 6.5 creedmor's this year on various actions. He also said he would build it around factory ammo too. He said Hornady got it right with this cartridge.
I'm contemplating building off a 700 youth or buying the Ruger laminated predator.

I got one cut with a standard throat. It shoots lights out with just about anything including the factory Hornady Amax. I could not reach the lands with a 140 VLD because of mag constraints. Never tried the LRAB or Scenar

JPro,
The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to provide approximately .260 Remington ballistics while leaving plenty of room in a 2.8" magazine to seat even the longest, sleekest bullets close to the lands. In fact, that was the entire reason for its existence.

Hi JPro, I just had a montana 84M rebarrelled to creedmoor. Going to unvirgin it this weekend hopefully. It's a saami throat length and with a 140 VLD seated at 2.805" oal it is about .03" from the lands by my rough old measuring.

This is similar to my experience with the 140 VLDs. The mag restraints of a BDL kept me from reaching the lands but I can reach the lands and barely fit them in an AI mag which I believe is 2.900".

Thanks guys. Seems like I remembered reading that folks using Ruger or AICS setups had no problems with any bullets making lands, but they offer 2.9" or more to work with in the magazine box. Sounds like a factory 700 box may require a touch of jump with the Bergers.
