I know they are both dynamite rifles, and wanted to know which you would choose between the 2.

The ZG-47 is in 30-06 great condition but with a slightly damaged stock and want 1399.00

The G33/40 is a custom with all the features I would change already completed in 280 and they want 1299.00.

What do you think?

I'd get the 33/40. Big-time cool factor. BTW, an original 33/40, not beat to death, is worth twice the asking price of your rifle.

G33-40's are generally good actions, but the only real reason they're so revered is they're slightly lighter than standard 98 actions, due to milling cuts.

Personally, I would buy the ZG-47, both because of the quality of the action (and rifle in general), plus the chambering. The .280's a fine round, but....

the 30-06 is the quinquennial all-around best cartridge.

There, JB, I finished your sentence.

Pics? Seeing the condition and design of both would help break the tie.

They both sound like winners but I really don't care for the balance on the bone stock ZG-47. I love the action though. With a new stock and barrel it would be one of my all time favorites but what does that raise the price to?

The G33/40 is a cool action but hard to make a call on a sight unseen rifle. Some are very slick and others have been butchered by "gunsmiths."

The originals I've seen were all pretty slick as is.

The BRNO ZG47 is a large ring with integral scope bases. It was built as a sporting arm in the 50's and is considered to be very desirable. It is a large ring.
The G33/40 is a military action/rifle. It has a small ring. Making it into a sporting rifle requires a lot of work. The action, if reworked by a really great gunmaker, is very nice. HOWEVER, if done by Joe the neighborhood gunsmith, it can be junk.

I bought the G33/40. I will post pics as soon as it arrives. From the pics it has been worked by a professional. The smiths name was JW Van Patten. The guy I'm buying from had this customized and rode in the safe more than the range of woods.

Is that ZG-47 a real Mauser, or just most of one like the current CZs?

I think I just answered my own question on a CZ collector site and an auction site.

Drool, Drool!

Anybody got any ZG-47 scope mounts in their box-o-junk?

Good choice...cheap if it has been well smithed

have been tempted by a few ZGs but still would have switched out safety & can do w/o the integral ring selection...

I too like the G33/40 but for half of that I found a VERY nice Husqvarna HVA 30-06! laugh

Of course that was two years ago. The HVA's are habit forming. Since then I have "had" to buy a 243 and a Mannlicher stocked 30-06, soon to be a 7x57 grin. All three HVA's were less than half of the G33/40.

HVA's are a real sleeper. Here's a link to an '06 restoration. Those actions are super slick, to me about as slick as the cherished G33/40 Mausers and a lot cheaper.
