Walked into the local pawn shop today. New in the rack, sat a 95-98% model 70 in 225 win. Great looking bore with an era correct Weaver scope to boot! I scored it for $850. I'll pick it up next month after recouping from Christmas.

Anyone know what time of year that Winchester makes ammo? I'd like to pick up a box or two, to have with the rifle. Thanks!

How cool is that?! What vintage is the rifle?

The oiginal owner said that it was a 1967 model. I'll post some pix when I get I pick it up. I was a little worried that I paid too much, but the book said otherwise.

You will like it! I have std barrel and heavy barrel the ammo is out there but U have to look, bought a box this week for 30 a pal picked up at a pawn shop. Red W in grip cap? Both of mine will shoot, the factory std had the sights removed , was an eazy job as they were screwed on. Winchester came out with it to replace the swift, nothing can do that! very best winpoor

Yes, it has the red W on the grip cap. I'm pretty excited to go and get it! If it was any other month, I'd already have it! Will post pictures then.

A buddy of mine told me that a lot of the 225's didn't make it into the eighties, as a bunch of them got re-barreled into 22-250's and other chamberings when the 225 started to die off. Makes sense to me. Feeling pretty good about this find.

Does Winchester still make brass for reloading, or just offer a limited quantity of loaded ammo?

Im 'die hard 64 BUT have owned and shot many post guns and compared to their counterparts of same era ,make mine a model 70. All red' W 'guns I own are nice shooters, here is what one looks like sans iron sights.

WP: I agree. I love pre64s. But in the early 90s I bought a couple of model 70s in 225. One was a sporter and 1 a varmint. Both were very accurate. I still have the sporter

Recently, I bought a m70 30/06 made in 1964. It too, is ugly as sin. But it shoots 150gr Sierra Pro Hunters into very tight groups using JOCs load of 4064.

Winchester poor, I see that your gun has a pad on it, is this the way that they came? If they would have come that way what kind of pad would it have been?

Not sure the exact date, but a 1967 M-70 should have the second version of the reverse checkered stock (1964 and 1965 M70's have the first variation as seen in Win-poors photo). The second variation came out in 1966, has a different impressed checkering pattern, shiny finish, and a Red "W" pistol grip cap (cap identical to the first variation). The third variation has the same checkering pattern as the second variation, a flat finish, and a little scroll work in the pistol grip cap. These are the standard stock finishes, there were also two variations of the Deluxe stock.

Ps. Longshot, You will enjoy owning a 225 WIN in an early Post-64 M70 - all the early pushfeed's I have owned have been shooters (I'm down to my last one now, a 1966 225 WIN). My understanding is that Winchester Ammunition classifies 225 WIN as "obsolescent" and runs it infrequently. I bought cases from Huntington's several years ago - when they are available get yourself 300 and you will be set for a lot of shooting.

Does anyone know of a 1964-65 style stock that is uncut or unaltered for a standard weight .225?

I have seen one about month ago. It had parkerized action, blued medium tapered barrel and dreadful pressed checkering. The gun was in fair shape and almost $700, insane. You do not want obsolete rimmed varmint cartridge in a bolt gun. It was stupid idea that lasted decade or less (Winchester stopped this chambering ca. 1972). If you like unusual stuff put together 6mmx45mm on CZ or ZCZ mini-Mauser action. Very nice deer cartridge in small handy package.

Big two thumbs down for .225 Winchester.
