Anybody here ever have an Alaskan Wilderness Ti knock off and decide to 'change' it a bit?

If I was to lay into it with a rasp, would I be screwing things up royally?

What part are you going to rasp & how much?

If you're talking about the barrel channel, yes, some can be taken out & you can reseal the area with some thin epoxy.

Only difference in the Alaskan Ti & the previous version of the "regular" Ti is the outside finish & the aluminum bedding block.

Ingue, I bought a LVSF that a guy had cut the forend off a bit. It appears to have exposed the core of the stock and is rough at that point.

I don't know if you cut the shell, if you can get it to ever finish smoothly without laying fiberglass?

Here is a picture with the forend cut off.

Acra-Glass gel works well for that. Let it sit a bit before applying.

You are going to cut through the fiberglass shell which will weaken it , you need to fix it with a fiberglass cloth wet with epoxy. Google surfboard repair

While it looks fine, compared to other Tis and knock offs it feels 'chubby' through the wrist and forearm ...

Acra-Glass gel will do it. I have one so done 10 years ago and well hunted with zero issues.

Ingwe, I just got done totally reshaping a carbelite stock, same stuff I think. Slimmed it way down butt to tip, near ti style. Watch the lungs and eyeballs if you really get into it.

Fiberglass resin is easy to work with, can change contours all you want. There's a Bondo Fiberglass body filler that's likely ideal to work with on these stocks but have not tried it.

When you open up pores, Bondo Glazing spot putty is a good simple way to smooth out, and cheap. Sands easy by hand or orbital. I didn't think there was much shell at all, not like a fully layed-up stock. It's really just sealed with paint or gelcoat I think. Just file, sand, glaze, sand, prime, sand, glaze, sand, prime, paint, repaint, change mind, sand, repaint, repaint...

I learned a bunch here: http://www.6mmbr.com/stockpainting.html

You're welcome. That Bondo Fiberglass filler stuff has fiberglass pieces in it, just like the stock. I found out about it after getting other stuff but on the one I was working on I wasn't building up, just slimming. Let us know what you do and good luck.

Well, for what it's worth. Guess I did not take any pics of the inner materials...

Started pretty thick, like these pics of other B&C stocks. Feels much better in the hand now.

I am duly and properly inspired! grin

Now I just gotta finish burning the barrel out and make something different out of it!

Ingwe,

IF you do it, I would be interested in the pics. I picked up a B&C Alaskan a month or so ago to replace an HS Precision stock. The B&C fore end is definitely slimmer than the HS stock (and 6 oz lighter). However, the wrist of the B&C stock is actually thicker than the HS wrist in both dimensions, even tho the B&C is more "open". I had the same thought of going after it with a rasp and some 80 grip sand paper. But wasn't certain what was under the paint...

Yah, just remember the multiple sand repaint change mind sand repaint step. Really adds to the overall pleasure.

A Nicholson Cabinet makers rasp #49 is a delight.
