I shot a nice freezer buck broadside at 80-100 yards with my 'Carlos' a 56' 30-06 target in a sporter stock using Hornady superformance 165gr SST, I have never knocked a deer off his feet upside down so hard in my 100's of SW GA whitetails. My nephew was in the 15' 2 man stand with me, 7 or 8 years old and he wanted to do the high 5 standing up!,I made him sit down ,the buck was flat of his back and kicked back legs once, Simp said, you gonna shoot him again uncle steve? I said no we are going to get the truck, I had a preacher that wanted him for his freezer. We went and got the truck, being 3/4 ton it was all I wanted to load alone, I called the rev and he met me at a friend that has a deer processing setup. Long story short the bullet went off like a stick of dynamite, never entered ribcage, lead and jacket, was under hide from ear to cod sack! Im not fussing, dead is dead, I have never seen one flip like he was hit with a wrecking ball. all I can say is even though very accurate it was to fast for bullet construction! I guess hydrostatic shock killed him! I will use the rest of those couple boxes on coyotes and crows! Im accubond to the core now on all cals! very best WinPoor

What bullet was this?

That's what I would expect from an SST.

Bought the round for trajectory beyond 300 yards for open tundra caribou hunting Zeroed for 300 it is about 9 in high at 200, 10 low at 400, 20 low at 500. Killed 4 animal in 2 days. In order, caribou at 300, 200, 60, and a moose at 30..

I may have to re-think this thing....... smile

Wow las, that's some midrange height! Got to be a typo, yes? Seems like you'd be 4.5" high at 200 with std scope mount. I like SST because they do some damage and loose some weight. And I've never had a problem getting them to shoot fine. Seems like 150gr bullets are light for the big moose you have up there.

Just ran data thru online calculator and it agrees with u. I don't have my targets or Nosler reloading book here and the page has disappeared somehow from iphone so I'm SOL to argue. I do have the note on the 260 with 140 gr Factory Corelokts and my note and the calculator shows a similar discrepancy some of which may be due to field condition sight-in using ATV seat as rest back in September.

Guns were zeroed at 300, then 200 sight checked with results as remembered and posted. If remembered correctly my field shooting was close to Nosler reloading manual chart. Of course I might have effed up!

Field trials on animals worked as expected using my sight in so for now I'm good since I'm meat rich for a year. Retest is obvious in order however... smile
Besides, I want to try it out at 400 and 500 which I haven't done yet.
Being short of ammo not available in village i'll have to retest after x-mas trip to anchorage. Weather permitting.

''06 150 gr bullet too light for moose?"

Apparently not.

I do prefer a 180,secondarily a165 for most all my hunting. Wife took a bull at 70-80 yards with 100 gr. 243 no problem, double lunged, no bone hit. He walked 20 yards stopped behind willows and tipped over in less than 30 seconds. Of the 21 moose we have killed with a variety of calibers and bullet weights up to 338, 275 gr GS, not one has complained about that aspect. I've the hots to take one with my .260, possibly using a premium, tho I've found any c&c used as designed to work just as well if properly placed at reasonable range.

Two bullets I will not use on moose after a single trial each is a factory Federal 165 gr Hi-shok, which showed immediate contact separation on a ram at 330 yards, and 4 days later on a moose at 75 or so. It performed as designed for say coyotes, speed goats, 100 pound deer and the like. Highly accurate in my 17 inch barreled '06, it was just a bad choice on my part for the use.

The other one time use/disappointment/never again is the NP 210 in .338 WM. it made a 3 inch entry wound on the shoulder at 100 yards, shattered the blade, peppered the near side lung with bb s of lead and bone without further penetration, flattening the bull. At ten feet out he jumped up again scaring the crap out of me. A second shot to the head worked well enuf. I never found the back portion of the bullet and never used the 210 again. Likely an anomaly but certainly not inspiring! If I ever did use it again it would be for 300 and under animals like deer and caribou. Too many "better" .338 bullets out there, including c&c s. yeah I know but one bad experience can prejudice a fellow.

Yup, those SST bullets are far too soft for my liking, with the exception of varmints.

Ok - I checked Nosler reloading #5. And found my 200 yard target. For 415 BC Nosler reads 6.8 inches high for a 300 yard zero, which agrees closely with my previous stated 8"(actual target just over 7) allowing for operator error, field and brain. 8.2 low at 400, 17.6 at 500, not yet field shot..

Since my field shooting agrees with Nosler, I'm just gonna ignore that other ballistic chart until reason otherwise.

You can't believe everything you read... Learned that a long time ago....
