Gonna get a new model seven in 308. And was wondering what scope to get a Leupold 2-7x33mm or Leupold 3-9x40mm? Also can I get silver rings and bases for it?

Leupold 2-7 would be a better match. I like the looks of black scopes, rings and bases on silver rifles, so I can't even suggest where you could get some silver ones.

A VX2 2-7 sits very nice on my Model 7 308.

I have 2-7x33s and 3-9x33s on Remington 7s and 600/660s and like them both. I'm sure that somebody still makes silver color bases and rings for them, I have Leupold QR silver bases and rings on some of my stainless 7s. On others, I have matte finished Warne bases and rings. The 2 7s that I shoot the most and stainless parts guns with laminated mannlicher style stocks in 223 and 260. Both of them currently have 3-9x33s in Leupold QRs.

2.5-8X Leupold VX-3 would be a very nice and light addition.

Agreed.........but more pricey, to answer the OP's question between his scopes in question the 2-7x33 sits real nice atop a Remington Model Seven.........good luck.......Hb

I have a Howa .243 with a 20 inch barrel that is close to the M7 in size.

The 2-7X33 Leupold is nice and proportional to the rifle. A 3-9X40 looked huge on it and seemed to hurt the balance.

The 2-7X33 was a better choice due to the fact that I hunt a lot of heavy cover and the field of view on low power is better helps.

i had a 3-9x40 on my model 7, it did not feel right or look right.
just bought a 2-7x33 VX2 to put on it.
came close to getting a 1-4x20, but went with the 2-7.

I have used both scopes on M7s.

The 3-9x40 is the largest I would use on a M7.

For a 308, I would most likely opt for the 2-7x33.

FWIW, I'd pass on the silver rings/bases.....

I just stuck a Redfield Revolution 2x7 on my Seven CDL....perfect!

I have used a 2.5-8X Leupold VX-3 for the last 19 years. Leupold silver rings and bases. Seems a perfect match.

I've got a set of Leupie 2-piece silver bases for the Seven that I would sell, if they would work for you.

I have a 3.5x10x40 on my Model 7 in 7mm SAUM. It fits great as does the 2.5x8x36.

The 2-7 fits and balances better on a SA rifle......

I think that the Leupold 2-7x33 and 3-9x33 are physically more in sync/tune with the shorter/smaller rifles than are many longer/larger scopes. This is a question of esthetics that is related to the individual's taste. What looks good and works well for me will never look and work equally well for everybody. Kinda like the color mix in McM stocks. Some guys will only buy muted color mixes, while other guys think that grape and turquoise are OK colors for a rifle stock.

The Remington Sevens with 18.5" and 20" barrel look "better" to me when mounted with scopes that have smaller 32/33mm objectives, while the 22" Seven SAUMs look fine (to me) with a larger/longer scope installed. Many of my Sevens/600s/660s have 22", 24", or 26" barrels installed and most of them have larger/longer scopes installed; 3-9x40s, 3.5-10x40s, 4-12x40, 4-16x42s, 6-18x40, and 10x40s.

I also live in PA and my furthest shot in 30 plus years was 125 yards because I happened to be in a tree stand looking above the laurel from a hill side. So assuming the rifle is for the super limited visual range here in the PA woods, I would suggest a 1.5-5X Leupold. I generally pull the trigger when the scope is at 3X. Even with a higher range variable, it is set for lower power and wide angle of view. Light weight and short rifle looks better every season as the laurel looks thicker and hills look steeper.

I tried a 3-9x33 on my 20" M700 in .243 because I thought it "fit the rifle" better. After a season of use I could not get accustomed to reduced light gathering ability and the short eyebox that changed radically as the power ring was adjusted. I went back to a 3-9x40 which only ways a couple of ounces more an is one inch longer. Much happier with the rig now.
