What kind of drop in mileage would you get pulling an average size trailer, with your truck bed full of ATV's ?
No matter how you slice it, pulling and carrying loads is going to cut one's mileage. E

The extra windage of a boxy cab-over camper is devastating to fuel economy.

Both a camper and a trailer will screw your mileage. There's no getting around that. Where a camper sucks is in wind, even with air bags. I also prefer a trailer because I can just park it and have the use of the pickup without having to unload the camper.

I've seen a few campers, or parts thereof, lying in barrow pits because the owner failed to have adequate tie downs. Make them SOLID. It would ruin your whole day to see your $20k camper fly off the back.

Some campers are outrageously overpriced. How can they justify $25k or more for that?

I have a 2003 Lance 815 which weighs in unloaded at 1,850 lbs per the sticker on the unit. Unloaded is without propane, water in the tanks, no battery and no personal items in the unit. It goes on a 1996 3/4 ton Dodge Cummins 4wd automatic which handles it real nice. I do have air bags on the truck which level out the back end when the Lance is loaded.

My g8-g8 uncle was Barney Riggs. Google and read about him. He roamed around the southwest, mainly west Tx and Az and NM territory. History credits him with from 9 - 12 men he killed, not counting Mexicans and Indians. Family lore has it at 18.

If you don't already have a second home...

Varmint: 3 disadvantages to truck camper are:
1. Wind resistence, especially side winds
2. Lack of storage
3. Breaking camp everyday to use truck
I mitigated these disadvantages by mounting an Alaskan Camper on a diesel F350 with a utility truck body from Skaug Truck Body Works in LA. I flat tow a Geo Tracker with manual transfer case and manual transmission or a Rokon during hunting season or a small fishing boat during non hunting months. My wife wishes we bought a Class B+ but I am happy. Checkout the thread on Expedition Portal of the Alaskan Camper build for ideas. I get 13 mpg fully loaded and 18 mpg lightly loaded.
