Several years ago, I bought a 700 .243 in varminter with a 26 in barrel.
Time was short at the purchase date so I threw together some loads with 65 g. Vmax, 70 g. Blitzkings, and 85 g. Sierra HPBT's.. Shot them at one hundred yards accuracy was excellent..Right around a 1/2 in to less.. Just rechecked some of these loads a 100 again this am and accuracy was excellent.. But when I got around to shooting these at 200 yards, about 3" groups is the norm.. I have a 3-9 Leupold on it.. I just can't see why the horrible groups at 200 and excellent at 100. I may try another scope.. But I am hoping some of the long range guys can offer some tips.. I have been loading for more than 50 years.. These are loads that have worked before.. A pal suggested I try Varget... I am stumped on this one.. I have thought of changing scopes, or stocks.. Never had a heavy barreled varmint 700 that would not cut one hole at 100 yards and do a fine job at 200.. At the time I was shooting the 243, I shot a 7mm08 at 200 and the accuracy was fine.. So I know I am not too old to shoot good groups.. Thanks.

Could be parallax. Set the rfle up on a solid rest and then see what the crosshairs do relative to the bullseye when you move your head slightly left and right or up and down AT 200 yards; If the crosshairs DO move relative to the bullseye you've found the problem. To temporarily solve the problem, you can move your head back farther from the scope until you have a VERY SMALL field of view (circle), then center the crosshair in that tiny circle while aiming at the bull, sort of like using it as a peep sight.

Parallax is possible, though have had loads that we're great @ 100 that truly screwed the pooch at the 2 & 300.
Load info would help, but my best is using 70 gr. Sierras with a judicious load of H-4895. Good rest and paying attention to wind also helps.

Thanks guys.. I have checked the parallax.. That could certainly be the problem... I am putting a 4-12 Leu. with an adjustable AO on it tonite.

Swifty, I will try the H4895, have lots of it. Sierra made a could other suggestions.. Will see how it works out.. Have good sand bags, and have been shooting on still days, which are rare in Wy. and I am sure Neb.. Thanks for the help both of you..

My first thought was parallax too although I wouldn't think it would make that much difference at 200 yds, though I've shot scopes adjustable for range for so long I'm not sure.

I have seen some extreme cases of parallax in variable scopes even at 200 yards, and some of the scopes were pretty expensive.

What I was getting at is that the scope may be parallax free at 100 yards but not at 200 or 300 so the effects of the parallax wouldn't show up at 100 but would show up at 200+.

Your standard Leupold 3-9 is factory set to be parallax free at 150 yards.

I've never had a parallax issue with standard Leopold at 100 or 200 yards.

I'm wondering if he has a slow twist barrel, or one where the rate of twist lows, or if the muzzle is slightly larger then then the rest of the bore.

Also, he is shooting is Wyoming. I have to wonder if the wind ever broke under 30 mph?

Holy smokes, what's Wyoming got to do with it, I haven't seen much under 30 mph here in Nebraska lately. smile
Going out tomorrow try some drunken Nosler Varmageddon 55's, winds variable 15 to 25 should be good for groups. whistle

Some ranges have wind currents that just tear up the groups. At our range, we have a current that at times will cause extreme flyers between 200-300 yards.

I agree, the lay of the range has a lot to do with it. You can get a lot of movement out of the group with a puff or lull when you pop the shot. Inch to 2 inch is not out of the realm of possibility.

If this was deflave asking, I'd say you waited long enough and the alcohol is kicking in. grin

2"-4" with a wind "switch" is easy to see with just a slight breeze. Now if you are dealing with a quartering wind of any kind, especially blowing at you, all bets are off.

It has always amazed me how most shooters are so ill informed of how the wind effects shooting. Many will spend hundreds on a set of dies to get precision loaded ammo, and be shooting in the "dark" when it comes to one of the very greatest factors-Wind!

They also don't realize that wind drift quadruples when range only doubles. They don't see much effect at 100 yards from a mild wind, so assume there will only be a little more at 200, instead of 4 times as much.

Flags at the 50 and the 90. I actually took this from a short video. Was trying to shoot some test loads and groups. Wind was a little weird to say the least.
