I handled an "as new" Smith & Wesson 29-2 4" today that has flung a pretty good craving on me. Unfortunately the revolver is priced at $1,200. I did not ask how much room, if any, there was on the price. I did not ask if it has box, papers, etc.
What would be a reasonable "out-the-door" price for this fine .44 Magnum? I am not a collector; I would shoot the fool out of the thing with .44 Special loads.
Thanks, RS

Seems a bit high, but would depend on condition, box ect. (Then again they all seem high to me.) I would think 7 to 9ish.
Guess if it is really as new, and you were planning on shooting it quite a bit, I would try to find one not "as new."

I think it's high as well. The -2 has been and still is a highly desirable gun, but the market has gotten soft the last few months. I'd be in the $800-$900 range. You didn't say anything about a box, paperwork etc, original grips all those things make a difference.

A bit high but -2's command a premium. Your choice on how bad you want it. I've yet to choose wisely on something I wanted bad enough.

Only an early -2 would be worth $1200. They made -2's until the late 70s and, by the end, quality was way down. That said, there are plenty of people willing to pay too much so it may well sell for $1200.

A 4" dash two is pretty desirable and it if includes all the original schit, I'd say the $1K range is not too shabby.
Shrapnel found me a pretty damn nice one last year and gave it to me for $800. After he paid $500.00.

If you want it bad enough, get it. They are not making any more of old ones, and while high now, eventually 12 bills will seem like a bargain.

If you're going to go north of $1k, you might as well hold out for an earlier, S-prefix serial number 29, 29-1 or 29-2 as the earlier guns are superior in almost every way to the guns made in the 70s.

Doesn't surprise me, but those are internet prices and I've found much better deals buying from local shops where the auction mentality is taken out of the equation.

..yea, but how many 29-2s of any vintage do you see in shops...you could be waiting a LONG tome for a deal that may never arrive.
Can't remember the last 4" 29 of any - for sale in New England...

I see them about every three months here in Oregon. They're not especially rare out here in 44 Magnum. 41's and 45's are a lot harder to come by.
And I agree with you that if you're in a hurry you'll have to pay top dollar. But I'm not in a hurry.

Same here. Stumbled upon this one a bit over a year ago at my 'smiths shop. No box or papers but $500 OTD.

In Indiana, I'd see a nice 4" 29-2 going for store prices of $800-900, firm.
$500 is a distressed sale. $1,200 is high.

The OP said as "new" I doubt there are many as "new" 29-2's out there, so 1200 may not be high at all. For a carry/shooter it is high.
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

http://sandburrgunranch.comIt's a longish drive for you, but if you've never been and you're in the market for N-frame .44 magnums, Denny Reichard is your huckleberry. DocRocket put me onto him. I have two, both of them purchased from Denny, with his action jobs. You won't get a good 29-2 for $500 there, but if he's got one, you will get it for a fair price. His daughter, Ashley, knows her stuff, too. It's worth a drive up just to make their acquaintance.

I put an "as new" (and it was) 29-2 6" on Gunbroker a little after midnight with a buy-it-now price of $1,500.00 a year or two ago. It sold for the buy-it-now price in 5 hours. Of course most of the country was sleeping during that time. It had the wood box and sleeve and all the accompanying stuff except the brush.
