Did you get any hands on with them?

yes I did, and I was VERY impressed

Are you able to voice a comparison of them to the Leupold GRs, which they have a striking resemblance to? Are these Minox FLP scopes, like the GRs? Any word on price point? Thanks.

The MD60Z is $1298.00 without the reticle and $1398.00 with the reticle

The MD80Z is $1398.00 without the reticle and $1498.00 with.

Unfortunately, there was no way to do a side by side

I'd be a little suspect of that listed weight. The smaller 1-5x24 scope is listed at 14.5 oz and the 2-10x50 is 22 oz.

Leica ER 5 US made riflescopes have 30mm tubes, are fully multi-coated without Aqua-Dura, and are all presently 2nd reticle plane

Hi Doug, did they happen to give a release date on the new Leica ER 5 line?

To add a little to what Doug said: Minox spotters looked very good. The 12-40x60 with the reticle was perfectly usable handheld at 12x and showed very good flare control.

I plan to get my hands on one as soon as they available.

Leica ER5 without hydrophobic = no starter for me in comparison to anything else available. Why did they quit using it?

They are against hunting but will take our money, talk about hypocrites. Nikon won't have to worry about seeing anymore of my money for any of their products.

They haven't quit using it. It's just not on this line of scopes just like Zeiss did with the original Conquest line.

Okay, but I don't get the point of a Leica if it doesn't offer hydrophobe. You know that was one of the big reasons that you chose the previous Leica. Now I don't see anything that would make me choose it over any other similar optic.

I agree with you and it was one of the larger selling points for me along with it's 4" of ER and the second focal plane reticle. I guess Leica figured if they put those coatings on their less expensive line, it would make it harder for them to sell the ERi's especially if someone didn't give a schitt about having an illuminated reticle. I know I used to feel that illuminated reticles were just another thing to go wrong and wouldn't have them in a hunting scope. The standard ER's have reticles that could use a little more thickness, so having an illuminated reticle takes care of any low light hunting situation were seeing the reticle was a concern. I have to speak with (ILya) Koshkin about these new scopes as he just came back from the SHOT Show and handled them and spoke with the Leica rep's as well. I know he talked with them last year and threw in his 2 cents about thicker reticles. I never would have thought that the euro guys would use a marginal reticle in any of their scopes as lots of guys used to feel that the reticles used in euro scopes were on the thick side and always have been. I guess that's where having a first focal plane scope gets challenging in designing a reticle that doesn't disappear on lower settings and then "appear" to get thicker when cranked up.
