I guess I should rephrase that question.

Are any of you guys using a 150gr bullet in the 300wsm for deer? Black bear?
What velocity?
Are you getting complete pass throughs?

When they first came out I bought one and shot nothing but 165 Sierra Gamekings out of it. Killed deer just fine and all the elk, I think it was 3 or 4, were shot in the lungs just tipped over right there. No tracking job, just take em home and heat up the fry pan.

About 5 years ago I used the 150 Etip around 3350 for one season. Definitely passed through, probably would still be using it if I had kept the rifle.

I have used several:
150 gr Nosler BT. Bang flopped every deer i shot. huge exit wounds. lots of meat damage.
150 gr TTSX bang flopped every one i shot (about 4) one buck frontal at 400 and bullet exited rear ham.
now shooting 185r VLD Classic. shot 2 does. ran. i think they pinhole. Problem is it was pouring rain and never found blood to recover. expected a bang flop. Will try on more doe on a morning hunt to have ample tracking time with no rain. but not impressed so far but too early to judge.
thinking of going to 180 gr accubond.

Haven't shot any deer with the .300 WSM.. Just got it and haven;t used it.. Probably will this fall. But have shot dozens of deer with the old .300 WM.. Often with 150's.. BTBT are a favorite, the old 150 Sierra flat base, lately I have been using the 150 grain Accubond. Have two .300 wm. One is set up for long range deer hunting.. I have been using 150's in it because in some of the hunting, I don't have time to run turrets.. My new .300 WSM just loves 150 gr. Nosler BTBTs. But I did not use it on a hunt last fall.. It will go this year.. Probably with BTBT or Accubonds. It also likes 165 Sierra HPBT's. For shooting under 600 yards at game I have relied on the 150's quite a bit.. I don't shoot over 600.. and seldom take a shot a more than 300 yards, but I know what needs to be done if I am faced with a shot at longer ranges..

Bigswede,
Where you getting complete pass throughs with the 165 gameking?
What kind of velocity?

North Carolina deer are probably not much bigger than Texas deer and the 150 grain bullet is overwhelmingly used here, and yes of course we get pass throughs even with cup and core bullets.

The elk tended to catch them in the off side under the hide, after they hit the ground. They would pass through most the deer. I hit one buck running away right between the shoulder blades, I was aiming for the back of his head, it actually flipped the deer azz over head before it hit the ground. Only time I've ever seen that.

Velocity if I remember right was about 3050 fps.

When I had my Finnlight 300 WSM I used 165 gr GMX @3200 fps, complete pass troughs on the few deer and elk I killed with it.

I since decided my 30-06 pushing 168 gr. T-TSX's @2900 is more than enough for my mule deer/elk hunting.

I have used a Barnes 150 TSX gr. at 3,150 fps, Shot 9 deer with this combination, and I have 9 dead dear with the longest track job was 15 yards. I have only caught 2 of these bullets, 1 in the ham on a straight frontal shot. The other in the front shoulder after a severe raking shot at 150 yards.

Load 180gr Accubonds for my best friend, his Dad and brother. They have taken about 10 Pa whitetails and haven't caught a bullet yet. Also they have taken 5 Moose with this load on 2 separate hunts. Managed to catch one Accubond that looked like a Nosler Ad picture. It was on the far shoulder of a 54" Newfie moose shot at just under 400 yards. Max Load 4350 per Nosler.

I think that, just like the 30-06, the 300 WSM is the high water mark for Whitetail cartridges.

A 300 Savage can penetrate both sides of a Whitetail, as can a stick with an arrowhead tied to it.

A guy in my club uses it on regular deer & it will make a complete pass-through lengthwise, but not on the up-armored deer.
