I am doing my homework just now.

It seems that 1/9 30 cal barrels are none too common.

Anybody ever do a build with a 1/9 twist 30?

Yes I have a 300 RUM with a 1-9 twist I also have a new 1-8 twist 30 cal barrel that I am going to use. You should have no trouble finding a barrel maker that will supply a 9 twist 30 cal barrel.

In fact Bryan Leitz shoots a 9 twist 308 win in 1000 yard compitition and has won several matches.

Robert,

What are you planning on launching them out of? Reason I ask is I've got a 30-06 with a Krieger 1:10 that I shoot 230gr Bergers out of with no problems.

If you're going with a 308 it might be needed, but anything faster I don't think the 1:10 will hinder you in any way.

The 240 SMK out of a 300 RUM 10 twist will shoot well until about 1500 yards and then they won't stay on a basketball court hence the 9 twist recommendation from Seirra.

I think I remember you mentioning that on another thread about the 230's doing well in a 1/10.

Don't tell anyone around here; but I am going to build a nice 30-06, and I am thinking of erring on the side of caution and going 1/9.

I think they close out your account if you talk too much about the 30-06! LOL

Nonetheless I was always interested in Montana Marine's experiments and I always like the efficiency of the case, with the heavier bullets. Years ago I had read that article by Litz about the 06 starting to shine at 200grains and above.

Something in the back of my mind is damning me for not building a 280AI but I am going to go with simplicity and component availability etc.

Reloader 17, 230 Bergers,and 240smk's Muzzle brake, 24"Kreiger is what I am thinking.

I've got a remington 700 long action already and an old police stock/HS.

Just got to lay hands on a barrel and a gunsmith who ain't too too busy.

Thanks for the feedback.

I fiddled with the RUM and 240's before I traded it off but never took it out that far. That case sure eats up the Retumbo, but I kinda liked that round.

Oh, and Robert, let me know if you need to borrow my reamer. It's based on the Serengetti reamer with a longer throat.

Very very nice!

I am busier than a one armed paper hanger with scabies right now, but I just might take you up on the reamer offer. Many thanks. Did a local smith build it for you? Hook me up and I will ups my klinky parts to him...

I was thinking about the throat geometry stuff last night and was going to ask the smith to cut a long throat like the Remington factory. I am not an expert on the jargon or the science but I use magazine length cartridges and I am not a bench rest sort... I don't turn necks or kiss the lands or any of that. Slightly sub 1moa is all I need.

I have a 26 3/4" Kreiger barreled 30/06 that gets some rather impressive velocities. 30/06 is one of my favorite cartridges.

A buddy of mine named Mark Pharr built it for me. http://www.tumbleweedsrifles.com/

He actually has my reamer in his shop.

I love practical builds like this , no monkeying with this and that -no need to.
I have people ask me -what do you think I should get for long range shooting ? They look at me like I'm crazy when I say 30-06.

Love me some 30-06....grin. With 1/10 twist I've had great results with bullets from the 110gr VMax on up to the 240gr SMK.

Although 1/10 has been the standard for the 30-06 for a good while, I don't think 1/9 would hurt anything especially with a steady diet of the heavy/long vld-type bullets.

I was reading where Bryan Litz has determined that a faster than standard twist had shown some BC enhancements in some of the vld-type bullets. I thought that was interesting.

here's some more 30-06 inspiration,

[Linked Image]

I've got a box of 250 of the Berger 215gr Hybrid in the pipeline. I'm soon going to see where the 30-06 can go with those bullets, and 4000-MR as fuel. I'll use moly, and expect 2700-2750 fps is realistic from the 22.5" bbl.

No, but they seem to be a winner with a lot of 308 tactical and f-class shooters. I can't imagine them being bad at 30-06 speeds.

Back when I was shooting moly'd 190 SMK over RL22, I was getting 2920 fps from the 26" barrel.

The 185 gr Berger should easily match that speed. With today's powder options, I'd moly up those 185s, and give RL-17 a try.

A guy I shoot 1000 yard BR against refabbed his rifle last season to run 30cal 230 Hybrids.
He went from a 6.5x47 Lapua to a 300 WSM. ,, Big expensive change.
Hes running a Lilja 1-10 twisted 1.25 bull barrel. Some how he got the thing to make the 17 pound weight limit.
I get this phone call.
Under 2700 fps hes getting funny shaped bullet holes at 100 yards. Accuracy at 1000 is not there.Hes been playing and he needs to run it up over 2750 to get round bullet holes.
Berger recommends a 1-10 twist. But Bergers Twist Rate Stability Calculator says a 1-9 is a better mouse trap.
Surprised Berger says 1-10 on there web sight..
So far his path down the 230 hybrid side isnt working very well for him.

...Ive been running a 210 Berger LRBT out of a 300 SAUM for 2 shooting seasons now.Out of a 1-11 twisted Obymeyer.
Get 2800 fps with 60g of ramshot hunter.
Never a hint of a odd or funny shaped bullet hole.
Accuracy has been excellent...

That's good info on the 230s.

I have used some of the Berger 210gr VLD in a 12 twist 308 with excellent accuracy. That was a few years back though.
