Working a trade for a 1873 rifle and want it shortened from 24" to 20".Any ideas on cost and who to do the work ?

what sort of 1873, not that it matters regarding your question. just curious. you may be throwing hundreds of dollars away shortening the barrel. a good hack saw doesn't cost much and recrowning can be done for very little outlay. satisfaction of doing it yourself is good.

I don't know that I've ever heard of anyone doing it, but would check Turnbull Manufacturing for a quote.

had me worried that it might be a Winchester. really it is not difficult to bob the barrel. just stay legal length plus some. hacksaw it then chuck up a brass screw in a drill smear it with lapping compound and lap the crown. have had great success with the few I have done. picked up a 94 win that rode muzzle down in a pickup for 40 years and looked like he had used it to drive fence staples. only cut 3/4 inch and recrowned. shoots 1 inch at 100. but it is a 32-40 so that is to be expected.
