Been looking for a 270 manufactured in the year of my birth and it's like looking for a unicorn. No luck whatsoever in, oh, about ten years of searching. Frustrating!

They are out there. In 2012 a friend of mine bought a 1957 .270 Standard Rifle from Dave Riffle Fine Guns. It was in 98-99% condition, and he paid Riffle's prices, but it was a nice rifle.

If you gather up the "usual suspects", and check them often, or possibly leave word with them about what you want, then I think you will find it.

Now, if you want a 1957 .270 AND a great deal, well, that is getting a mite specific.

Looking for a rifle that was manufactured on my actual birthday....166 M70's were also born on that date....have come within a couple hundred on the serial # range a few times. Range is stored in my cellphone and it's a perfect excuse to handle and closely examine every M70 that I come across.

Just out of curiosity, what basis do you have for thinking that you could get one made on your birthday? I was unaware that factory records would have that data.

In fact, I am under the impression that assembly involves going to the parts bin and finding a certain caliber barrel, possibly made 1-2 years before, then fitting it to other parts of uncertain vintage. Would assembly be complete in a single day?

Or you could check this out:

This auction is for a nice Winchester model 70, Pre-1964, bolt action rifle chambered for the 270 Win cartridge. This gun is serial # 420838 making it a 1957 production gun. It has a 24" barrel with a hooded front sight and flip down, adjustable rear sight. It has additionally a Leupold base so that it could easily be scoped if you prefer. The finish on the metal is very nice with only minor scratches. But there is a few small dings and very minor surface rust at the end of the barrel (outside not bore side - so it would not effect accuracy at all)! The wood has some minor scratches and scuffs. The bore is excellent (very shiny with defined lands and grooves)! This is a great gun to add to the collection or just shoot if you like!

It's not the cleanest example of a pre-64. The wood looks refinished, some surface rust, scratches... The pictures are not the greatest. You could probably beat him down on the price, or keep searching..? confused

I'm not thinking that I could get one made on my birthday, I'm absolutely certain that I could identify a M70 made on my actual birthday if I should be lucky enough to come across it. Polishing Room records (the date a rifles receiver was serialized) exist for a range of dates which include my birthday.

Eric

Mr Eric, I guess thats why I love these guns, Ive gotten em in looked just like that and cleaned em up for what I swore was the first time in 60 years, grabbed 4 of 5 different factory loads and gone to the farm, airstrip. Some of the guns were, are so accurate I would not tell folks here because they would think you were lying ! I usually put and old leupold 36X target scope with a 1/8 moa lee dot on the guns to"see what they will do" Its almost like cheating! very best WinPoor

Winpoor, it would be interesting to see what this rifle would look like all cleaned up, and with some decent photos. I'd love to have a 36X target scope to test out accuracy. For now I'm getting by with a 15X.

Thanks for posting....That's the first 1957 270 I've run across....I'd want it to be in a smidgen better shape than that if I am waiting this long. Keeping my eyes open!
