I'm currently reading "Tough Trip Through Paradise" by Andrew Garcia. It's a good read similar to allot of accounts of the Mountain Men in the Rocky's with a good amount of info about the Nez Perce's fate during the later part of the 17th century.
It's sparked an interest in learning a little more about the Nez Perce so I've been browsing some of the online sites looking for another book or two.
Turns out, there's quite a few of them out there with pretty good reviews but I can't read em all so I'd like to hear any and all recommendations.

Thanks Mojo,,,, that one and "I will Fight No More Forever" by Beal are two that I'm considering.
I don't mind covering the same ground twice in the least. Sometimes it actually helps put something you've already read into perspective and other times it exposes exaggerations.

Every time that I see the name of that tribe, I automatically picture them all running around wearing glasses with no temple pieces.

One of my favorite reads is by Lucullus Virgil McWhorter, "Yellow Wolf; His Own Story." Anything by McWhorter is worth reading regarding the Nez Perce.

Every library in the area will have a copy of it, if your not looking to buy. McWhorter got to personally know many of the warriors who fought the soldiers in 1877. He did extensive research on the subject and got many first person interviews.

"White Bird" by Bob Painter is pretty good too. White Bird was one of the Nez Perce Chiefs who escaped with some of his band to Canada and stayed there.

"Lewis and Clark among the Nez Perce" by Pinkham and Evans is a good read. I have this one and you are more than welcome to it.

Yellow Hand comes up when I Google Nez Perce, but I couldn't really find out what it pertained to.
It's everywhere in the used books web sites so I'll probably just buy one.
Thanks for loaning me Garcia's book. I've read volumes about every tribe BUT the Nez Perce which is kinda weird since I live on the Nez Perce Rez. LOL

Do any of the books discuss the Appaloosa breed ? Daughters first speed horsenwas an Appy and she is lucky to have survived. Open the gate and stand back. I would like to read a truthful account of their history.

Well,,, I'm now in possession of "Yellow Wolf" and Nerburns "Chief Joseph" but haven't started them yet because I'm in the middle of "Blood And Thunder" by Hampton Sides. His writing style, while informative, is painfully boring so it's taking me a while to get through it.

There is a road side monument to him just East of Tonkawa, Oklahoma on highway 60.

There's another one in Joseph, OR.

There's a few along 395 going through the Rez in Lapwai.
A couple along 12 by the White Bird battle ground too.

That ol boy really got around.

BTW,,, the book Lonny loaned me (Tough Trip Through Paradise,, Andrew Garcia) is a good reference too but don't read it if you don't like sad endings.
