I know the older ones had better triggers--at least the one I had did. Does anyone know the model # or approximate date of manufacture you need to look for to find the ones that pre-dated the guide gun?

The 1895, 1895S, and 1895SS all predate the guide gun. They all have the same 2 part trigger/sear arrangement and the same sear spring design from 1972-present. If you had an older one with a nice trigger it was likely just luck of the draw.

I'm not sure of the dates or serial #s of the earlier rifles.
With my Marlins I like the reduced power hammer spring from Wolff, they cock easier as the hammer is pushed out of the way more smoothly and the trigger also has less tension to work against.

If you want a better trigger the Wild West Guns "Trigger Happy" trigger is a drop-in and worked great on my older Marlin.

One of the parts I'm having installed by my smith now, along with a few other Wild West parts.

I'll second that. I have one in my Guide gun, an excellent addition.

Here's a pair of 45-70's. The Marlin stock was re-shaped to look more like vintage Marlins. This gun has the Wild West trigger, tweaked for optimal performance. Those units are top notch. I don't think one can get a std. factory trigger set up as slick as one of these.

I worked over the factory trigger on my GG and it came out very nice. Easy to do.
