I just bought a new set of scales and decided to weigh 2 rifles: a CLR with lightweight Talleys and a Model 70 Winlite with standard Talleys, both rifles chambered for .270 and wearing Conquest 3x9x40 scopes. The Model 70 came in at 7 lbs 7.7 oz. The CLR weighed 7 pounds 11.1 oz. the CLR actually feels lighter than the 70 in hand.

I then pulled out my favorite big game rifle, an old Sako Mauser in 375 H&H with a 21" barrel and wearing a Trijicon 1.25x4 in EAW mounts. The 375 came in at 7 lbs 13 oz- a real featherweight for a serious hunting rifle.

The Sako is making me rethink my entire battery. Why do I need small and medium bores when the 375 will handle everything and only weighs a few more ounces than supposed light rifles? It may be time to move a few and buy a nice ultralight in one of the 6.5 bores or 280.

I could buy a really nice rifle with the proceeds from pre 64s in .243FW, .270 and a really nice .338, along with the 270s and an 06 or two.

Is this a teaser?

Not a tease, just random thoughts. I have been thinking about upgrading and rebarreling the CLR, but now wonder if it is worth the cost. I also looked at he Mountain Ascent in 7/08 at the DSC show and really liked it. The LAW rifle looked good too until I saw the weight. Lighter rifles look better with every year that I get older.

The .375 is really too much gun for me and my 22" bbl Sako is at the dealer for sale.

I weighed some old and new favorites and the

Kimber Montana 7mm WSM 4.5-14 leu 7# 1 oz.

Savage99F 358 Win 2-7 leu 7# 14 oz.

M70F 4X Xeiss Diatal 7# 14 oz

Kimber Montana 308 2.5-8 Conquest 6 6 oz.

All guns should be locked up when not in use!
