Pre' 64 300 Win Mag. Non original pad.
I had one of these go thru my hands about 1998-99, paid $550 for it with a steel tube 4X Weaver....should have kept it.

Welllll, I probably shouldn't do this, but, I have handled several P-64s, with EXACTLY that pad on them and I THINK they could be ordered that way.

I have a Fwt.-270 with one, almost bought a very late AK-.338WM with one and seen them on a .300WM and a .264, actually 2 or 3 of the latter.

Now, it all comes down to what YOU like, but, while MY six original magnum P-64s all have much nicer metal than that .300, IF I were 15-20 years younger, I would probably pay the asking price for it.

A nice and VERY useful rifle, especially restocked with a good synthetic. JMHO.

My Alaskan is a solid pad so that one has me wondering if it's original. White line spacer?
Easy fix no matter though.

The cartridge coming out in early 60s means relatively few pre-64s were made in this chambering. This means whole lot to American old Winchester lovers. Not sure how Canadians pick their guns. This being common caliber in new sporting bolt guns I would not pay 1800CDN for used old one. The fact that .300WinMag fits into standard length action doesn't mean anything to me. I do not like this cartridge at all.

I guess the fact that it was introduced over fifty years ago, yet remains a "common caliber in new sporting bolt guns" means a few people like it fine. Just sayin'

On the other hand, if I couldn't use any rifle cartridge developed after the .270 (1925, I believe) I'd be happy. I'd have to replace the .300WM with the H&H, but that would be OK. If I wanted to hunt elephant with a bolt gun, I might want something more modern. But I don't see elephant hunting on my horizon.

When there is new Montana Rifle Company or Kimber product in same caliber to be had buying non-collectible old Model 70 in same caliber (that is very expensive because relatively few were made) makes zero sense to me.

Well.....here's my 2 cents FWIW.

10-15 years ago I'd have said "no", too much money. But today...and with any old run of the mill factory rifle bringing about a grand.

And a Dakota with many of the same features costing over $6000.

It being a pre 64 and you KNOW it's gonna just work, the barrel is good and it will shoot. And like it or not the cartridge is still far and away the most popular 300 magnum .

I'd inspect the tube(probably fine),ignore the worn floor plate, try to bargain it to $1500-$1600. Put the stock in a corner and drop it in an Echols Legend. Hunt/shoot the hell out of it and if I lived long enough to wear it out, I'd sell the stock for $300 bucks and use the proceeds for a new Krieger tube.

I was commenting on your stated distaste for the cartridge. As for the other part, lots of people do things that make no sense to me. Buying cool Pre '64 Model 70 rifles isn't one of them, but hey, that's just me.

All pre 64 .300 Winchesters had the Winchester-marked ventilated pad with white spacer.

Looks like somebody thought it was worth that, or close enough for the previous owner. Listing is gone! Anybody here the new owner? (just curious)

My understanding is that Montana actions are investment cast, not forged. I do not know about Kimber.

In my opinion (although admittedly I'm not a collector of pre-64's) I would rather buy a new Super Grade. No wear and tear and of known quality. I have a Super Grade in 300 WSM that I only paid about half that amount of money for. The accuracy in my opinion will equal that of one of the old guns. At least mine does.

Personally I don't understand what the attraction of these 50 to 70 year old guns is. As usual, however, it is your wallet so spend your money in a way that pleases you.

The attraction to me is a Pre '64 is a piece of history you can use. I like the modern ones too, particularly the earlier G-series New Haven guns. But the Pre '64 is the rifle that made the reputation of the Model 70.

The 300 Win. Mag. is an homely cartridge. It does not belong in a pre-64.

Plus that's way too much money.

I have all the old M70's I want and I would not pay over $550 for that one.
