Will a 257 Roberts AI reamer completely clean out a 250-3000 AI chamber?

Thanks.

I don't like to do it that way, as the pilot wont reach.

Ok thanks for that. Is it fair then to say that it can't be done?

Should work fine. Not sure why the pilot won't reach, that doesn't make sense to me.

I think ClarkM is saying if the gunsmith uses a piloted reamer the pilot won't fit in the bore before the body of the larger reamer hits the smaller body of the previous chamber. The smith would have to ream the body of the new chamber without the benefit of a pilot in the bore.

A smith could potentially use a non piloted reamer? I think there is a live center reamer or something to that effect, but I've never seen one. All the reamers I have (3) are all live piloted reamers.

A picture would make this very clear. Unfortunately I don't have a picture.

What length action are you using?

The smith could dial in on the bore and then do a bit of careful work with a boring bar to remove most of the old chamber.

You are talking about being really fussy.

This is the point. Its chambered in a 30-06 length action. Bit of a waste of space. I figured if a relatively simple rechamber could be done I'd have something that makes better use of that long mag well.

I'm yet to shoot it in its 250AI format as the rifle won't arrive until next week. Its a Shilen 24 inch barrel in good shape so I'd be keen to put it to good use on the pigs.

No reason for it not to work. They're both AI's, essentially the same shoulder diameter. The .257 has a little more neck that's all. It's just a matter of making the shoulder about .300" deeper. Take a chamber cast first though. If you re-cut the .250AI chamber make sure the 257AI reamer you'll be using has a web that's no smaller - not even a little bit - than what you've got. And also that shoulder dia of the existing chamber is no larger than at that point on the new reamer. But this isn't a difficult thing.

Years ago I had a .243AI re-bored to .257. The chamber was re-cut / lengthened to .257AI. No problem.
