I got a line on a Remington Model 30 S. It is not original so I am not killing the collector value. I want to buy it for the action. Thninking it might make into a nice 404 Jeff with a re-barrel. Anyone know a smith that works on these. Want the bolt handle straight. Bolt face needs to be opened as it is for 30-06 class cartridge.

Jim Kobe cut the dogleg bolt off an Enfield for me, and welded on a straight bolt. It was just a tad over $100 and done in 2 days.

Easily to replace bolt handle if equipped and qualified.

I assume you want a 404 because you want a 404. No rational reason needed among us gun nuts.

If this is a DIY project, you're okay. If not, I'd take a close look at a CZ as it wonderful and you'll never lose a dime on it down the road.

A 30S is a terrific base for a 404 Jeffery or even a longer, bigger cartridge.

Personally, ammo avaialbility, choices in bullets, potential performance, velocity-wise if you wanted to hop it up a little bit like I do, feeding and all tossed into the mix, I think you would be much happier with the end result by building a 416 Rigby.

I am hoping to trade our own Hubel 458 out of one of his 1917's or 30S rifles in 585 Hubel Express one of these days. I owe him a African hunting DVD and some African Hunter MAgazines right now, but after I get those to him, I hope that he and I will be talking turkey again.

My personal killingest rifle is a much modified 1917, the predecessor to the 30S as I am sure you know. My rifle has killed dozens of critters with each of three so far chamberings. 30/06, 300WBY and now my wildcat 338/8mm RemMag for the past 20 years.

LOTS of great options for that great old rifle. Pretty much any cartridge which has been dreampt up to be fired from a shoulder mounted rifle can be chambered and made to run in that awesome extra long Mauser action. Just a TERRIFIC Safety ,too.

If you do not buy it after all, PLEASE PM me its whereabouts so that I can grab it for my 585 Hubel Express project!

Good luck and do keep us posted with what you do here, please.

Is this a new poster here on the Fire?

Or is this old Larry Root, using his umteenth handle to sneak back in where he's been banned.

Hmmm...

It's a massive action so perfect for the biggest cases.

You might want to post on the AR big bore forum for gunsmith recommendations. In addition to straightening the dog leg and opening up the bolt, you'll need a properly sized magazine, some feed rail work and likely some work on the front side of the receiver to eject loaded rounds.

Goodness Butch, that's a wonderful rifle!

Wow!

Always have been a fan of the 1917, mine remains a "sporterized" .30-06, and in the past few years my youngest son has taken two bucks and two bears with it.

Excellent rifles! I've often thought about making it into a .375 or something large...

You ought to see it in person! I was privileged to fondle that rifle last year at the Shilen Swap Meet and the picture doesn't do it justice. grin

I've built several rifles on the 17 Enfield. If you are building a magnum, it's easiest to get a bolt from a Pattern 14 British Enfield. They interchange and the 14 bolt is for 303 British and is already opened up to a magnum bolt face. Ihad a new bolt handle welded on one last week and the guy with the heliarc charged me $20. Of course I did all the filing, he only welded it.
