Back when they first came out I was in school and couldn't afford one but wanted one bad. Over the years the lust for one faded, especially after I heard bad things about the accuracy, some one said four inch groups was the best they could get.

Yesterday I spied one in the rack at a local pusher. I glanced over it but didn't look to hard as it wasn't what I was looking for. Supposed to be unfired. Now, I hear it calling my name. The voice seems to be getting louder.

I was told it was a first year rifle. He is only asking $500.00 which from what I see online is a pretty fair price if it is unfired. It is definitely in very good condition on the outside, but as I said, I just gave it a quick once over.

How about it, anyone had one. Quality? Accuracy?

Thanks,
Dave.

Not a bad gun, but I like the older 94s better. Only way I would own a XTR is if it was a big bore model. Of my 4 30-30s, all were made before 1958, IIRC. Not a bad price, if new. If you like it, I say get it.

I bought a Marlin 336 in 375 Win (made in 1980) yesterday.......

I've got one in like new condition {unfired when I bought it} that was made in 1979. First year they were made was 1978. Anyway, they are well made and nicely finished. Maybe I got lucky but mine is just as accurate as my 1949 model. Both have now been fitted with Williams receiver sights and both will group 3 shots right around 1.5 inches at 100 yds..

Thanks guys. Sub 2" groups is what I was hoping to hear. I've had three 1970's model 94's and all three would meet that standard. Easily.

Dave.

Every rifle is it's own story. A buggered crown, a poor trigger, or a bad shooter, can impact a great rifle to an incredible degree. The only way to know what it will do is to buy it, shoot it, and work with it.

I had a 94 XTR in 30-30 that would put 3 bullets touching with Win 748 powder and a Leopold 2X-7X....Even I was amazed as it was my first 30-30.

The XTR's were well made...take the plunge.

I have a Model 94 purchased new in 1966 in England at the Alconbury Rod and Gun Club, before we left to come back stateside.

its been sorta of minute of deer at 100 yds since day one... no tack driver, that is for sure...

but being a handloader and working with it, there are certain loads it loves....If it hadn't been in the family since new, I'd have traded it off long ago... but since I've had it for almost 50 years now....

if one can give up top velocity, with 20 grains of SR 4759, it is a tack driver with 150 and 170 grain bullets...

its also a tack driver with a very stiff charge of W 748, with deeply seated 180 grain and 220 grain Round Noses....

I'm sure you don't hear of many people using 220 grain RNs in a 30/30.. but with all of this 300 Blackout Crazy, it isn't as wild anymore as people use to think it was...

I'd dive on it... you live in West Virginia...there is ALWAYS a market in WVa for a 30/30 lever action...I'd bet the first rifle you'd find in many homes there will be a loaded 30/30 in the gun rack in the Living Room...at least in Monroe, Greenbrier & Raleigh Counties...

It came home with me today. It included a set of what looks to be Leupold rings and bases. Now I got to get a scope. My eyes are to old for open sights even with a peep.

Then start from around 0 again saving for a .308

Thanks guys.

Dave.

Nicely done.

I slapped a new VX-1 2-7x33 with heavy duplex on the new 375 Win.

It is a lot of scope for the price IMO....

I have a 2x7 33 Leupie on my Mdl7 260, yes it is a great scope and I am considering going that way just haven't decided yet.

If a 17 y.o. gets it you must be doing something right. Good on ya'.

Dave.
