I may need to run one of these on my .308 for a while.

I picked up a VX-R 2-7x33 with ballistic firedot here on the fire a couple weeks ago. Plan to put it on my 358 Hoosier and compare it to my Duralyt 2-8x42. I like that Zeiss scope a lot for about $100 more.

For comparison:
VX-R 2-7 weighs 13.1 oz on my postal scale
VX3 3.5-10x40 CDS weighs 13.0 oz
Duralyt 2-8x42 weighs 16.5 oz

Even though the Duralyt is heavier than what I'm looking for, what did you like better about it?

I was thinking of putting the VXR on a Montana 308 and 13 oz is about as heavy as I want to go.

Dirtfarmer,
Just from what I've read, most of the issues with leica scopes seemed to be associated with the first line they produce with leupold. But I will certainly dig deeper on the interweb.
As far as leica's warranty I understand their demo's have a ten year warranty. New optics have a lifetime but is not transferable. I think this would hurt the value a little if I went to resell it. I don't typically trade or sell off my scopes though.

RH,

I liked the color and clarity of the Duralyt over the VXR. To my eye, that scope is pretty easy to get behind.

I have about a dozen Leupolds, from M8 forward. I'm about to send one back, for a reticle change.

Two older Zeiss 4x that have been trouble free.

Swarovski makes great clear glass. Like Leupold, they have great customer service. In my limited experience with four pieces, you will need and use the CS. They break, but often come back upgraded and better than new.

You pay your money and make your choices.

We can only report our own experiences. That's the beauty of the Fire. It's inappropriate, IMO, to challenge a contributor when he reports what he's seen or done, just because that experience is counter to ones own. People tend to protect their positions, which is understandable.

I like to read opinions of others and decide what's appropriate for my application.

I respect JG a bunch and know he's an experienced BG hunter. I take his and other's opinions seriously.

All devices will fail sooner or later. It's a function of timing and if it's your turn for something to happen. So, CS is very important. Seems Leupold and Swarovski have better CS than Leica. To me, that devalues the Leica brand to some extent.
