As for X7s, I have one in 7-08 and I'm looking for a decent take-off to put on it...just to play with another caliber mostly.

I sure hope X7s are not history. They've got a lot going for them, and are better than their cousin 783 IMO.

Sad to say they are history in favor of the big green's latest attempt to make an entry level rifle.

They are for sale at around $300 all over the net.

Assume the same cartridge head size, the "regular" Savage barrels mate right up.
Barrel vise, nut wrench and headspace gauge. Takes 20 minutes.

Shaw also makes barrels as well.

More choices in a long action and 30-06 X7s can be had <$300.

Own four of the Marlin X rifles and sorry to see them discontinued in favor of the Remington 770 & 783. Basically very pleased with accuracy of each of mine "out of the box."

I like to make a wood stock, more suitable for benchrest shooting, replacing the factory plastic hunting type stocks.

Like a Savage, easy to rebarrel a Marlin X rifle. But, one difference between a Marlin X action and the action on a Savage I like, is the spacing of the screws, securing action to stock. The rear screw on a Savage is before the trigger and on a Marlin, it is behind the trigger. Its a minor thing, but have made stocks for both Savages and Marlins and just not much wood to work with around the rear screw hole of a Savage action.

Just curious, but why would you go to the trouble of trying to rework a Savage 110 series stock for a Marlin X gun when you can buy a properly inletted stock from Boyds for under $150?

Boyds is currently offering the following stock styles inletted for the Marlin X guns; Classic, Featherweight Thumbhole, Heritage, Platinum, and Prairie Hunter. I have both XL7 and XS7 barreled actions bedded in their Prairie Hunter style, which has a fairly wide forearm.

IIRC, the XL7s have the same action configuration and screw spacing as the standard length post-'64 Winchester 70s. If so, that would likely be an easier stock to recycle than a Savage 110 series stock.
