LOL, it was a hell of a kill, not hunting, more like grocery shopping with a rifle, but this time, it was Sharps Rifles.

My bull gave a clear shot in the herd at about 161 yards, me never having had the pleasure of shooting/seeing buffalo up close caused me to hit the brisket on the first shot, bullet went through the brisket and broke the bulls left front leg on exit.

I didn't know about the 5/6 inches of hair hanging down from the buffalo's chest, got that figured out quick and center punched the heart on the next shot, the bull bellowed and spun out to just under 200 yards, the 3rd shot was dead center through both shoulders, got the front of the lungs on that shot too, he was done and down at that point.

My little 45-70 done a hell of a job, I got exactly what I've been loading and testing for, a 530 gr paper patched bullet at 1230 fps that shoots very accurate and punches a straight wound channel and is not deflected, three shots and three pass throughs, I can't ask for more from a Sharps rifle, all shooting was done prone and off my elbows, in all the excitement I forgot to grab my sticks. smile

This was my first buffalo, but definitely NOT my last.

Thanks for all the help, tips, and info over the years Men, I really appreciate it.

Gunner

You're not going to post any Sharps/buffalo porn for the rest of us to enjoy?

Good work guys. Doing a group hunt is a good way to do it.
They even look bigger when hung up.

Nothing wrong with a .44 ET!! I took two with three shots using the .44-2-5/8bn (.44-90bn) and the .44-77. All three bullets kicked up a lot of sand on the far side passing through.

Congratulations, Sir, on a job well done! I love happy endings, especially when they involve BP smoke and cast bullets! grin

Many thanks for the well wishes and congratulations guys, I appreciate it, buffler steaks should be hitting the hickory smoke this weekend. grin

I spoke to Sharpsguy today and he wants to weigh in on this thread too, his computer is acting up, he can read along but can't sign in to comment, he thinks it may be a site issue.

Enjoyed your post gunner, you've done well. I did beat you on one score though ,I thawed some of mine out the night of the same day I picked up the meat and had a meal of it. LOL. I took mine at Sandhills Outfitters on 1/26 with my 50-140 at 100 yds using a 500 gr PPB with 143 grs Fg Goex. Magnum Man

Helluva deal and Thanks MM, I'll bet that 50 knocked the crap outta that buffler.

I'm experimenting with a 50-90 Sharps as we speak, I have a 22 twist 34" Badger barrel on an older '74 C-Sharps Arms rifle, I had a mould cut by Brooks that throws a 750 gr grease groove bullet with around a .400 thou meplat, am running it to 1320 fps with a big charge of KIK 2F.

Load accuracy and sight correlation still to come, it's gonna have to be a world beater to out penetrate that little 45-70 of mine. grin

Gunner, I am sure that will. I used a 500 gr FN Rapine ppb, my old Shiloh LRE has a 1 in 36" twist and is marginal on stabilization after 600 grs. Normally I use a modified 50 cal RCBS paper patch mold at 570 grs but I was worried it might exit and in a tight herd environment that ain't good. My bullet still weighed 492.6 grs after being pulled from the meat. Not really sure a guy can " knock the snot out of a buffalo" they can sure take a beating and keep on their feet before they figure out that they are dead and go down. I'll bet that 750 will penetrate as good as a 45 500 gr it's a lot of bullet. Magnum_Man
