Haven't had a bowl of really good ice cream in years and wondering if any of you guys are doing it.
When I lived in Pa. I used to get homemade from an Amish lady and the all natural ingredients made a simply amazing bowl.

Denny, I've though of asking that question, but thought I'd get hooted out of "Dodge".
We enjoyed the desert two weeks ago at a friends home.
To store buy the ingredients, a premium ice cream would be cheaper. If you have a cow, that would be a horse of another colour.

Kinda thought I'd have to duck a few rocks as well and yes it would be cheaper to go with store bought. The Amish lady made hers with an ice cream churn similar to the one pictured below and it was mounted to an old hit 'n' miss motor. The taste and mouth feel was nothing short of amazing.Hope to hear about a recipe or two from the guys.

Love the stuff but never made it myself.

Fifty plus years back, the family had a dilapidated hand crank freezer with one hold down hook broke off.
The one taking a turn needed to hold down the one side with a rag to keep the hand from freezing,---- as quickly.
That was some good ice cream, course, we milked back then, and had the fixin's.
I think the sufferin' was the secret ingredient.

Banana nut & pistachio are tied for first Mike. CCM is a hard second. Please post if it's not too much trouble. I'd rather keep it simple at this point though. SPUMONI ice cream is my all time favorite ice cream but it's regional as well as being seasonal. Darn hard to find. Betcha Dan has had it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spumoni

Mike I'll take that if you don't mind. USU college used to have one colored blue with Oreos and white chocolate, boy that was a treat. https://aggieicecream.cart.usu.edu/Details.cfm?ProdID=1447&category=68

On a vacation at the lake last year my mom or sister (or maybe they split it), bought a White Mountain freezer. I doubled the cream that went in the recipe. Thought it was great covered in mashed and sugared blackberries. They said it was to rich and had a mouth feel like butter. I think they were wrong.

Homemade is a bit of trouble and expense but it is great treat at the right time and place.

Ice cream is just another of a growing list of things I don't bother to make from scratch any more. Damn, I'm getting lazy or something.

Haven't had it in years, and it's very seasonal, but a bowl of homemade peach ice cream is very hard to beat.

We make it each year when we hit the Idaho place. Pick the hucks on and around the property. Yum.

Here's the one my family has used for over 40 years now. It's amazing.
HAZEL SECRIST'S ICE CREAM
5 c. scalded milk 2 1/2 T. flour 2 1/2 c. sugar 3 eggs slightly beaten 1/8 t. salt 1 1/2 T + vanilla 5 c. thin cream or 1/2 and 1/2 Mix flour, sugar, and salt; add egg slightly beaten, and milk gradually; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the custard coats the spoon. Cool well, stir in cream and vanilla and freeze in ice cream freezer. Makes 3 3/4 qts.

We still make it every summer. If you don't crank you don't eat. With South Carolina Sunny Slope's there's no doubt about the flavor of choice for us.

I'd had at least a decade long hiatus on making ice cream, but I did a batch of Toblerone ice cream last Summer that had the family pushing me for several more batches.
THEN, I made some coffee ice cream with chocolate-covered espresso beans. Angels were heard singing when it was eaten.
It's just enough bother to keep me from making it regularly, and thus it remains a special treat.

O.k. guys, sorry for the delay. Homemade Chocolate Chip Mint Ice Cream 6 Eggs 4 Cups Heavy Whipping Cream 4 Cups Half & Half 1 Small Can Evaporated Milk 1 1/2 Cups Sugar 3/4 Cup Light Corn Syrup 3 teaspoons Vanilla 3/4 teaspoon Salt 3/4 Cup Creme de Menthe Liqueur 1 Cup (or more) Mini Chocolte Chips 1/2 teaspoon Green Food Color (Optional) Mix it all together with a mixer, pour it in your ice cream maker and crank away (or plug it in like I do). When finished transfer to a Rubbermaid or Tupperware style container and place in the freezer for 3-4 hours before serving. We have also done other flavors by substituting the Creme de Menthe and chocolate chips with the following. Butterscotch Schnapps and Toffee Chips Banana Liqueur and Chopped Pecans or Walnuts Peppermint Schnapps and Candy Cane Pieces Cherry Schnapps and Chopped Black Cherries w/ Black Walnuts Basically any liqueur will work, just use you imagination. And don't worry, your kids won't be staggering around drunk. I was raised on the stuff and I turned out fine! Mike
