I could've posted this in the classifieds but thought I'd reach more individuals here. I'm a rare poster here but been a member for awhile, and I'm having trouble with irons and game, no misses yet but I'm selling guns and have a fair amount of components. 200 unfired 405's and 150-30/40's. I've also loaded ammo for 405 with RL15 w/ Barnes and Woodleighs, 200 Partitions and Speers in the 30/40 and H4350. The loads have been safe in my 1895 Winchester 405 and 1895 Browning 30/40. Drop me a line if anyone is interested.

Steve,
Took my 1895 .405 to the range today to try some of those 300 grain TSX hand loads of yours. They shot great - same point of impact as my 300 grain NF loads and as the Hornady 300 grain factory loads.
Now I am sure to use them on my hog hunting trip later this month. I will let you know how effective they are at poking daylight holes in a porker.

Get three porkers to stand in a row, a warm TSX load will probably let daylight through them all.

405 is a close second to my 400 Whelen with 400 gr Swifts or my hoard of 400 gr old Xs. I couldn't get enough wet phonebooks in boxes to stop it.

Took him @ 250 with a 350 gr old X.

You have a beautiful rifle and elk! Also a powerful rifle.

Ballistic performance
Bullet weight/type Velocity Energy
300 gr (19 g) SP 2,300 ft/s (700 m/s) 3,522 ft·lbf (4,775 J)
350 gr (23 g) 2,100 ft/s (640 m/s) 3,430 ft·lbf (4,650 J)
Source(s): 350gr - Barnes[1]
The above 400 Whelen ballistics were copied from Wikipedia and are bit hotter than the factory .405 WCF. My loads approach the above with 300 grain bullets at 2250 fps and 400 grain Woodleigh Cape buff loads at 2080. Some fun pasting the big stuff with these rifles, eh?

cr: have you compared penetration between the 300gr TSX2250 and the 400gr Woodleigh @ 2080?

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Jorge,
Not yet but I plan to field test the TSX on hogs Feb 28 and will do a separate post on that.
6-8 guys from DWWC and I are going to the Boars Nest with some heavy artillery including my 405, my son's .458 SOCOM, and Vances new (bought at DSC) Sabatti double in .45-70.
There should be several "daylight holes" that day.
I am also taking a few each of several 45-70 loads to play with the Sabatti if I can talk Vance into letting me try it. So far he is pleased with the way it shoots - holding in an 8 inch bull at 100 yards at 100 yards ( of course he is a rifleman and can shoot anything well smile )

Shot a mature bull bison last week with the 300 grain TSX's. Range was approximately 85 yards. Load was 51 grains of IMR 3031. Estimated muzzle velocity was 2,100 fps.
Bison was hit a total of 6 times. 2 bullets passed through, 3 were recovered (2 on the off side just under the hide) and 1 could not be found. Massive damage to the lungs and surrounding rib bones on both sides.
Two bullets looked like a poster child for Barnes advertisements with a perfect 4 petal fold back and they weighed 300 grains. The other bullet recovered had 1 petal broken off.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Our hog hunt was postponed due to icy roads and rescheduled for March 28. I am hoping winter is over and we have cool but not icy weather.
