Hello there,
I do have a savage 250-3000, looking to find out what is the twist of the spiral of the barrel, in order to find bullets and load to reload its ammo.
I heard if I find out the year it was manufactured, I may be able to determine what is the twist of the spiral it was built in, could someone out there shed some light? The serial number of the gun is: 194072.
As I said I’m looking to reload ammo, any help from anyone is greatly appreciated; I'm from Mexico and down here is hard to find ammo for this puppy.

Undoubtedly a slow 1-14 twist.

Your rifle was made in 1919, and any factory 250-3000 prior to 1960 will have the 1-14" twist rather than the later 1-10" twist. Shorter bullets are your friend for accuracy, 87gr bullets or short 100gr bullets. A lot of like the Speer 87gr Hot Core.

Just to add, you have a very desirable and valuable gun especially if it not been messed with and has condition.

Thanks a lot to all of you for the information; I’ve been having really hard time to group with this rifle, after reading at the reloading handbook from Hornady, found out the 117gr with ballistic won’t be controllable with a 1-14 twist, I also have 120 hollow point from sierra, but based on your inputs it will be a waist to keep trying with any of the 2 of them. I’ll try to get the 87gr suggested and give it a shot.
In the other hand the rifle is in really good shape, I got it in a trade few years back, the only issue is that it got drilled in order to mount a scope on it. Other than that is really nice piece of gun. I’ll try to load pics of it to the blogs, if any of you know how to do that with that much of trouble let me know.

Once again thanks a lot for your help & guidance, it have been really helpfull and a eye opener for me regardng reloading.

To answer gnoahhh, is more less as you described, but i'm able to find IMR4064, not sure how to get bullet for now, we'll see.

It took me little bit of time to get pictures & be able to get down loaded from the memory stick & now to that website you suggested; hopefully the link works, loaded them as private, but if they don't display, please let me know to chage them to public.

Finally, does anybody would have a ball pak price for a rifle like this?

It's actually a pretty nice gun.

The D&T and the sling swivel studs just kill it's collectors value though.

Unmolested that gun could be 1200ish IMO as long as there aren't other unseen problems like tang cracks, numbers that don't match, etc., etc., etc.

600-700 as is, without scope would be my WAG. Course somebody will say it's worth 2000 and somebody will say it's worth 400. It's actually worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it.

I'd keep it, hunt it and enjoy it.

Fellas, thanks a lot for your comments, definatelly looking forward to see many years of hunting with this little rifle & my two boys. I'm following up with your advice of ammunition usage for this caliper, when you say short you mean a smaller bullet? or just the weight of it?

So the question is based on your experience, would you say I’ll better grouping wise if am I stay with the 87 gr even is not a baot tail than to go to 100 gr boat tail?

By short I mean total length, from tip of the nose to the bottom of the bullet.

For best grouping, you're almost always going to do best with the shorter flat based 87gr bullets. Even when the 100gr bullets shoot perfectly well for hunting, the 87gr often seem to group a bit better. A lot of the boattail bullets are a tad bit longer than flat based bullets, so.. beware of the overall length.

Of the 2 bullets you link to, I would think the flat bottom bullet would do better in your gun since it's only logical it's an overall shorter bullet.

The Speer 87gr Hot Cores are popular since they are built and at least advertised by their manufacturer as a medium game bullet. Other 87gr bullets like Hornady will also group just as well, but some folks (like me) are leery of hunting deer with them given that the manufacturer says they are varmint bullets. I've yet to have a shot at a deer with a Hot Core, but I know it's deadly on antelope.

SPEER 87 Grainer Work FANTASTIC

The checkering on that 250-3000 looks really sharp, nice gun. A couple of things to know if you don't already:

1. Make sure the lever is down, bolt is retracted before turning the barrel out to take it off. A broken extractor may result otherwise.

2. The gun can be decocked while closing the lever. Press the trigger while closing the action. You can feel the interference while doing this, the trigger tension will lessen. Continue closing the lever.

Grains-------------87-------100-------120
Bullet Length-----0.82-----1.00------1.09
Velocity-----------3000-----2800-----2500
Required Twist----15.4-----12.2-----10.6

Data pretty conforms to what folks here have posted ... an older 1:14 twist 250-300 will stabilize with a short, 87gr bullet, but will have trouble with longer bullets.

If you can get .22-.250 brass, it is simple to neck up. You'll need a tapered expander ball though.

Hello there!! hope everyone are having great time with there family in this important holyday.
I was wondering if you could shed some light, i bought a box of brand new ammo, 100gr remington, i shot 5 or 6 rounds, the rifle has been deforming the cases in one of the sides almost at the bottom of the case, just above the extractor grove, after the shot is done the case come out with a bump around 2 o´clock. i´m blaming a set of rounds i bougth from a local reloader, seems the cases were not re'sized given about 6 of them got stock on the chamber, i´ve noticed some of the ammo didn´t allow the lever to completely close, i´m wonderign if those 6 to 12 shots were able to damage the barrel, to cause now bums o every single case.
In the other hand i´m wondering if am I will be able to either repair or buy a new barrel for that rifle? savage 250-3000. Once again thanks a lot for your greatly & kindly help.

Lots of 99 250 Savages have large chambers and need to be resized to fit particular rifle and chamber. Can you post a pic of your fired case with a bump? Also overall case length after firing factory round.

I'm back after to this posting, last year I went back to school for a semester & was not able to get really active on my hubbies.
The total length of the case after been fired is 1.910", this was a brand new ammo, 100 gr.
I'm also attaching pics & a quick sketch I made to illustrate the bump little better, thanks.

I had a custom 17 Ackley Hornet that did that. Was still the most accurate rifle I owned.
