I've been trying to make the little Explorer work as a truck for nearly half a year, and while it's a surprisingly capable wagon, it just couldn't quite get it done. So I've been on the hunt for a good, used 4X4 truck for the last couple of months. No surprise, everything is either totally hammered or way more cash than I wanted to part with.

Watching Craigslist daily, this one popped up on Friday. 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 4X4, extended cab with the 5.3 V8 and Z71 offroad package and 106K miles. Good, says I! Turns out it also has the LT2 package and bucket seats. Even better! It also has the heavy towing package and 3.73 gears with locking rear. Excellent! The owner just had all the fluids changed, new tires installed, and other goodies. Truck has been very well maintained and is in really good condition. Bought it on the spot.

Hit Craigslist when I got home and found a perfect camper shell about 200 miles away for $600 (was $1500 new). Called the man, said I'd take it, and picked it up the next day.

The ~400 mile round trip, which was 90% highway, netted 19.7 hand-calculated MPG. I'm extremely happy right now!

Nice Truck, 19.8 MPG was about the best I could get out of the 5.3 liter I had.

Yeah, I had a company truck a lot like this one and could squeeze 20 mpg out of it once in a while. Put well over 100K miles on that thing and never had a complaint.

Called the dealer today to check the service history details. Last spring the PO had the new tires installed, new upper/lower ball joints, coolant flushed, transmission serviced, both differentials serviced, new spark plugs and wires, transfer case service, oil/filter change, alignment, front rotors machined, and new brake pads. Service writer said the total was $3500 plus. I just wanted to know what had been done so I didn't spend time/money redoing it. Looks like I'm set for a while.

Replaced the step bars today. One of the plastic steps was missing on the driver's side bar and made it pretty slick when wet; didn't want the wife to slip. Also installed a Westin HDX grille guard I scored on Craigslist for $300. Put in some Lund extreme catch-all floor mats, too. Never had these before so we'll see how they do.

Put a DuHa under the back seat. Great storage for guns, first aid, fire extinguisher, rope, etc.

Had one in an F-150 I had, and it worked pretty well. Never actually used it for guns, though, as it was full of other stuff. I've looked at them for this truck, and considered just building my own.
