Have the opportunity to pick one up. It's a basic sporter in like new condition. First what's the actual value of these in that condition. Anyone have one with the reported accuracy issues?? If so did you fix it or sell it. Basically just fill me in a little on these as I have never handled or shot one. Thanks guys

I have one in 17HM2.

Every other 17HM2 that I have, or have had, CZ/Marlin/Ruger/Savage, are better shooters than the 504. Shot 100 rounds, cleaned it, put it back in the box, and put the box on shelf to gather dust.

Thanks. Any idea what a good used value would be? Doubt I could ever find a Lilja barrel for it if it doesn't shoot. So not willing to pay premium for it since its a gamble.

I have one in 22lr. This is my second one and both of them were/are shooters.
I've thought about buying another one, installing a heavier barrel and putting it in a laminated stock I have. Would be a fun project.
I think they are one of the smoothest rimfire actions on the market. Triggers aren't bad either.

So what about price?? What would you be willing to pay?? I have a 455 and it shoots way better than me. It's very accurate, but I am always looking for a nice 22. Just don't want to buy the rifle and put too much into it and it not shoot for crap. Any thought??

The Rem .22s I have had have been accurate but since you already have a .22 you seem to like I would not consider this one with the dubious reputation for accuracy, especially at what you describe as a premium price.

I have one that will finally shoot half decent. I've been through hell trying to make it satisfy me, even a proven used Lilja didn't do the trick by itself.

Personally, I wouldn't buy another unless I could shoot it first to see if it satisfied my needs/wants. If it did then maybe $500 - $600 max for me.

I do know where there is a new one still on the shelf for (I think) $585.00. At least it was there a month ago and has been since they were still being produced. About a year after they had quit making them he wouldn't come below $615.00 on it.

Dave.

I got to test-shoot an early 504 and about the best it would do was an inch for 5-shot groups at 50. Would have bought it if it shot better, but my Model 81 Marlin, purchased for $20 when I was in junior high, shot just as well--and I still had it.

Heard many reports of the same from other people, and Remington heard the same thing too and started making 504's that shot well. (They did know how to make accurate .22's back then, and still may. I just haven't shot any Remington .22's for several years.)

The problem was evidently fixed pretty quickly, but I don't have any info about serial #'s.

I bought a late one and it shoots as good, if not better, than any 22LR that I have.

I've had a couple including a beautiful factory maple stocked 504 HB. The ones I had just weren't in the Anschutz or even CZ accuracy class.

KevinJ: I also have been looking for a Remington 504 "in the flesh" - I just have never seen one!
I liked the looks of these in the Remington catalogs back when they were offered, just never saw one at a store or on the used gun market.
I would still kind of like to try one.
I did buy a heavy barel Remington 541-T last year and it shoots "lights out".
Good luck if you decide to try this Rifle.

I've got these numbers some where I'll post them if I can find them. my son has one of the "good" ones it shoots good , but ain't no cooper , annie 54 or custom 40x. best I remember like .3-.4 AT 50

They may have gotten a tad better toward the end of production but it was to little to late and it wasn't every rifle.

I don't know if Lilja is offering pre-fit barrels anymore. If not, I wouldn't take a chance, if they do I wouldn't go more than $300.00, $350.00 absolutely tops and I'd have to want it awfully bad for that.

The heavy barrels did have a better reputation for accuracy but even they didn't hold up to the high dollar rifles. I've often wondered if the difference for accuracy is in the stock. The stock and barrel was the major difference between the 504 and the custom shop 540, but as I said a new barrel didn't always cure an ailing 504. More reading than you want to do on rimfire central about the issues with the 504.

Dave.

Here's one of the targets from an untouched 504 sporter in 22lr.

and a target from my other 504 sporter in 22lr.

I have more targets, but you can get the gist of how mine shoot.

I've owned, and sold, 3 of them. They were notorious for shooting 2 or 3 into a nice little hole then one would go off flying somewhere an inch or two away. Also had the bolt handle break off on one and needed to JB Weld it back on.

Beautiful guns and had nice triggers but wouldn't shoot for crap on a consistent basis. Best one ever shot with was Remington Gold bullets which are usually junk. Go figure.

Nope, don't miss 'em and won't buy another.
