Have a .45-70 revolver with a 10 inch barrel. After firing factory loads I can literally tap unburned powder out of the empty cases. Anyone have a good accurate fast powder load for the 405 grain semi-jacketed flat point? Want to get factory velocities in a faster powder (so it all burns) that I can also use in my Henry .45-70 lever action. Any help would be appreciated.

Somewhere between 35 to 42 grains of H4198 should get you what you want, you should find an accuracy node in there. RL7 would be another good candidate, though I don't know what charge to recommend.

Even with a 10 inch barrel and a powder as slow as H4895, you are going to burn all that's going to burn before the bullet leaves the barrel.

Some powders need higher pressure than what is generated by some loads in the .45-70 to have an efficient burn, the 4895s are one of them. You can't stuff enough in the case to get high pressure. An inefficient burn is the result, though accuracy may be excellent.

If you can find it IMR-sr4759 is great in the 45/70. 28grs nets 1511fps from my 1895G with 405's.

I'll see if I can find some. Is there a chart somewhere on powder burn rates from fastest to slowest or vice versa?

Thanks all, this has been a big help. Looks like I need to try a few and see which give me a more efficient burn. Hotter primers nor a better crimp will help? Or am I just getting into trouble there?

A good crimp will help but I see no need for anything other than a standard LR primer.

A friend uses 12grs of Unique and 405 cast in his 45/70 pistols.

Here is some more low velocity data, not sure how much speed you want: http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm

As long as what you are shooting is accurate I wouldn't worry.

It's work, but there's also a lot of enjoyment getting it done.

Keep good notes and try some things. The .45-70 cartridge gives you a bunch of options.

I use 40 grains of IMR 4198 under a 405 gr cast , it burns clean with no unburned powder gremlins left over.

I have used that charge in my Guide gun with a CastPerformance 420 grain LBT and the Beartooth Bullets PileDriver Jr.

Between 1635 to 1650 fps velocity and both bullets are very accurate. Recoil is stout but not painful, definitely not an "all-day bench load".

Penetrates, too!

Plinker load = 25 grains of H322 behind a 405 grain cast lead bullet. It's a zero recoil tack driver in my guide gun.
