I got a last-minute invite to fish Lake Powell from a houseboat last weekend. There's such an abundance of striped bass and walleye that there's no limit on either. It is not unheard of to catch 100 stripers per person over a weekend. There were six of us on this trip, and here's the result of our first day's efforts (in a 120-qt cooler) Here's my host with a typical five-pounder And here's a shot of the weather we had to put up with. It was chilly, though; we all wore coveralls for our night fishing and were glad of them.

Sounds like a very good time. Certainly you have some beautiful scenery. We toured through Utah a couple years ago and were very impressed by the scenery, very picturesque.

Thanks for the photos Rocky, that's a lot of fish, jigs or bait? When you add in the weather and scenery that's hard to beat this time of year. Is a fishing license for both states required?

Oddly, the most fish came on a bare jig with a chunk of cutbait. I caught a couple fish that way, then decided I'd prove the regulars wrong by trying a variety of other baits and lures. Only one fish over the next two days made me look kinda silly. By the time I conceded my ignorance, there was no way for me to catch up to the guys using the proven combo.
The rules there are a bit odd. You can fish the whole lake with a Utah license, but if you are an Arizonan, you have to buy a special Utah tag to go with your AZ license. In the other two large lakes Utah shares with other states, you have to have a reciprocal tag both ways to fish the other state's waters. But in any of them, you only need your own state license to fish your own side of the lakes. Is that clear?

It took two guys with electric knives several hours to get through the whole batch - and our host apologized again and again for the poor fishing.

With fishing that hot you need chilly! Glad to see that you are doing your part to lower the water level and keep Lake Powell from flooding!
And good on ya for going against the grain and trying things. It sucks when it doesn't work, but that is how we learn. And when it does work. .

Used to do that every year with the family, but camped on the bank and used a runabout. The water has dropped so far we can't get to our old place, but I still plan on getting back soon.
