I'm looking to buy some Merino layers. I've looked at all the major brands and can't see much of a difference visually.

Is Icebreaker any good? I can get it locally. If not, what brand do you recommend?

I just got my first set of merino Icebreaker a couple months ago and really like it. Way better than the synthetic stuff I have always worn in the past.

Plus it doesn't seem to get stinky armpits even when worn for days in the field.

Check out "Swandri" pre-shrunk Merino shirts and jackets.
Made in NZ and all the Aussies use them in snow country.

I have icebreaker, smartwool, kuiu and firstlite.

I prefer all the above. Can't complain about any of them.

I have icebreaker and smartwool. Both are very nice.

Very little if any stink, no clammy feel, and wide temperature range.

I buy whatever is the cheapest at sierra trading or camofire. They all seem pretty similar. None are all that durable. All are very good at not smelling. One thing to be careful of is what type of fit you want, some of the icebreaker stuff fits very snug like under armor, and some is more of a loose traditional fit.

If you look at some of their base layer products, they don't have a fly front. I won't buy it without a fly and I was thinking about the mid-calf to wear with tall socks.

In my experience I have found icebreaker to be very comfortable but very poor durability, as with pretty much all merino really; socks, long underwear, beanies all seem to fall apart pretty fast. All pretty much disintegrated on me. My icebreaker stuff lasted less than a year.

As much as I do like wool, it wears well, Patagonia capillene is the best for me. WAY longer lasting (merino is expenssivvvee) and same warmth. Same pair of capillene long johns are still going strong after 6 years. As for odor both seem the same to me, I just hope i never [bleep] my pants.
