What he said.

The Leupold 2-7x28s are a great fit on the short action 77RSIs 'cause the objective is small enough to clear the open rear sight. Since your 77RL doesn't have a rear sight that needs to be cleared, the 2-7x33, 3-9x33, and 2.5-8x36 would all be good choices. Sightron used to make an SII 2.5-10x32 that is, size wise, nicely balanced for 20" barreled short action rifles.

I've never seen a Weatherby Whitetail Hunter and have wondered if they really existed or if Weatherby made for one for some gun writer, maybe Layne Simpson, and never really intended to put them into production.

I have heard that only one-three WTHs were ever produced....the rifle was pretty well thought out and that small action was PERFECT for that size cartridge (IMHO).

I know Layne had a Varmitmaster action for his 7mm SGLC(??) that was pretty sweet.

Mine is a 250 Sav AI but there's not much difference. With the 1-10 barrel mine likes 117g Hornady BTSPs.

It LOVES 85g NBTs though, so the 80g TTSX might be the next experiment for an all round load. I think 3400fps out of the 25 inch barrel would be doable.

3400 would be no problem with the 80gr TTSX in the AI.

I have one of these rifles with the tang safety. I load 100gn bullets, usually the 100gn Hornady, with H4350. This gets about 2770 fps in the 20" barrel. The 100gn Ballistic Tip was too hard and used to zip through pigs which would run a ways before going down. I have shot two pigs with the one bullet twice using 100gn Ballistic Tips. I love my little rifle so much I recently sold my Model 54 .250-3000 as I like the Ruger better.
