I am going to be starting to collect parts and pieces for a rifle build. Even though I love the Ruger tang safety and have my 280 built on that action I am told it is not a good platform to build on. I would like to know what you people think is a good economical action to start with. My rifle budget will be in the $400 - $500 range, cheaper would be good LOL. The rifle will be a 338-06

Thank you for your suggestions.

I'd have zero qualms about having a new barrel screwed onto one. It's not my first choice for a benchrest or lightweight rig. Since I don't shoot benchrest nor would I want a lightweight 338/06 it bothers me not.

If your wife is in the room scroll past this quickly, and I apologize. If your rifle budget is $4-500 keep us informed. Using Shaw Barrels and having them screw it together is at least $300. I dont think you will stay on budget.

I agree. In fact, I would take a Ruger MK ll and consider it one of the better choices.

Check out accurate reloading for reports. If they came in Left hand I would buy several.

I'd build it on the Ruger if'n that's the type of action you like. Shouldn't be an issue a'tall.

Find a smith who likes Rugers. I've heard the metal is hard and I know that narrow tang can compress wood. So, pillar bed it when you glass it.

And how exactly does the tang relate to pillar bedding? The lug is to connect the action to the stock during recoil and the action screw holes are oversize to prevent them from touching the stock...

Why not buy the cheapest tanger you can find, and just have it rebored?

If you already have the Ruger action, it's a no-brainer -- build on it. That's the only way you'll come near your budget, unless you are an able gunsmith yourself. It would be tough to have an existing rifle re-bored and re-assembled for that amount around here.

Sme,
Is that 500 dollars US or Canadian?
I think the other posts are right...if you like Ruger actions use them.
But the custom work I have had done in the past....just having a riflesmith put on a barrel was about 300 to 350 dollars.
That was after I picked up an action and a good stock that I liked...then I added a $300 scope.
so, good luck.

I have a few Ruger M77 re-barreled, if I was going light weight I would pick something different.
