What is the difference between the standard die set and the new small base dies?

The difference in the small-base die, is that it sizes the base of the brass an additional .001" give or take over a standard FL die.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Never had a need for them in any AR I"ve ever seen since the late 80s.

And they are not really new, unless there is another iteration of them out there. I've been using small base dies for a Model 6 Remmy '06 from the early 80's and they weren't new then. They were designed for auto and pump centerfires.

What is the difference between the standard die set and the new small base dies? They return brass to their minimum (original) dimensions. There's no need for them in an AR, but I will say that if you are going to have multiple rifles in the same chambering, and you don't want to keep track of which brass goes to which rifle, small base dies will save you a lot of frustration. Agree, I could hear the difference in the sound the action made when closing. A nice pronounced lock up versus not so much with the standard FL die. JMHO YMMV.
