I have a Browning B-27 O/U that I need to have fitted with a good recoil pad. It's a very basic field grade gun and it's light so it has plenty of felt recoil. I can really hit with this gun and expect to both hunt and shoot skeet quite a bit with it .

When you shotgun people have a pad added do you have the stock shortened or just go with a slightly longer LOP? I hate the thought of removing any wood. And what pad do you recommend?

Try a slip on pad to see if the added length will screw with your gun fit. If it doesn't, you can probably get away with just tacking on a pad without cutting any wood (if the stock is cut flat at the butt to begin with). If the extra length messes with you, then you gotta cut wood first. Shape, color, softness are a matter of personal preference which only you can decide.

Won't a good pad be pretty thick? Like 3/4" to 1" thick probably. I couldn't stand that much more length on my stocks. I shoot 14 1/4" - 14 3/8" stocks, so cutting some wood and grinding the pad to fit is pretty much routine for me. I really like the Decelerator pads, but there are other good ones available also.

The last pad I used was a 1/2" thick solid red pad I got from Galazan's (CSMC).

Yeah, I think it sort of depends upon the gun and purpose. Classic pad like you described goes well on a lot of guns but wouldn't cut the recoil like a 1" Decelerator. Guess the choice is mission specific, firearm related and a good dose of personal preference.

I like these pads for all around work

1 incher is the way to go. As to fit take the gun to a skilled smith that can grind the pad to fit properly and can assist in fitting. If you think you can hit with it now dial in the fit and you should be even better.

Thanks guys. Based on your recommendations I've found a very good gunsmith who actually knows how to fit a gun. He does high end work and I don't have to worry about my stock being butchered.

passport - he's a total fan of the pachmayr pad you recommend. Prefers that to anything else he's worked with.

100 bucks with the pad is pretty close, 55 or so in labor.
