Winchester Classic Featherweight #9646849 03/01/15 Joined: Jan 2015 Posts: 68 The Hills of Virginia HighlandRam OP Campfire Greenhorn OP HighlandRam Campfire Greenhorn Joined: Jan 2015 Posts: 68 The Hills of Virginia I have been trying to find out when a gun was manufactured it is a Winchester 70 Classic Featherweight 270 cal.with the serial number G1215xx.It is in mint condition.I was on the Winchester site and typed it in under the Model 70 and it comes up as 1949 and I know that isn't right.So I just need a little help. The gun you describe was was made in mid 1970s. It's 1974/1975 according to their site. I looked over 7x57 'Lightweight' #G20679xx in very good condition. That one was made in early 1990s. Not bad guns at all.

I have a few 5 digit Classics (Gxxxxx). Yours would be considered a 6 digit Classic. When winchester started making the "Classic" Model 70 they restarted the serial numbers at G15000 I believe. The Classic was brought out in 1994.

When little used or like new it should cost almost the same as new ones made today in equivalent grade. Something in caliber no longer offered like 7mm Mauser is few hundred more.

I didn't know post 64 CRF guns had unique serialization. As you have probably figured out by now rifles are pretty much meat getters to me. I will say some of those newer Winchesters came with surprisingly nice wood unlike old pre-64 standard grades that came with straight grained "man wood". When mine fell on wood floor only wood floor got damaged (marked).

I'd much rather have a dull looking (TOUGH as hell black walnut) pre 64 model 70 stock than a fancy/easily marred new stock. The fleur de lis checkering on nice wood plus deep bluing looks real sharp. They sell for little less in "potato country" (man, they grow mighty fine potato there). One would expect higher price in Texas, CT, Wyoming,....... or Kalifornia.

I don't have the serial number dates in my head like the Pre's. Sorry for insulting your rifles. Wasn't trying to do that at all.
