I have to say the deer took 0 steps after the shot. He was hard on quartering towards me at the shot and he ended up about 6 feet strait away from me. Side note is I had 0 meat loss and he is very good eating. Oh the shot was 30 yards.

Yeah. The kids LOVE the .223 due to the lack of recoil.

has anyone looked at or tried the mossberg MVP rifles? they make em in .223, 308 and 300aac.
ruger has a new ruger american ranch rifle out too that looks like it will be good.

My next ideal rifle will take AR mags, shoot the 300 blackout and have a threaded barrel. I wish ruger made them! mossberg is the only one who says they do, but there are none on the open market.
I got a new toy I want to play with this fall smile

I wouldn't look at a mossberg anything. The two I had were total crap. I do however, have a Ruger American and so far I like it. The mag could be improved upon tho.

Oh the mag is easy enough to fix. I think a 1/2 with a file would take care of it. The gun shot great.

I know three different guys running those All American's including Tom) and all have been very satisfied with the accuracy performance and price.

I bought a Savage Axis last year, which basically competes for the same market as the All American. I got a really good deal on it, but to do it again, I'd probably go with the All American.

Several months ago I bought a slightly used Savage Edge in .223 which is the earlier version of the Axis. It does not have the Accu trigger. Otherwise same rifle. I like it. It's very accurate and functions 100%.I like the demountable magazine.
I went overboard on the scope. It is a 10-40X50 illuminated. REALLY brings far off stuff in CLOSE. The .223 is a good round.

Stan-my findings exactly. My Axis is a .243. The only thing I'm remotely concerned about is the magazine. The catch on the mag is plastic, and I could see that breaking while in the woods. I got two mags with the gun, so I make sure I throw the spare mag in my pack just in case. I haven't run much ammo through it yet, but so far it likes the Fusion stuff a bit better than the Winchester. Once I accumulate a bit of brass I want to load for it. Should be a very accurate rifle from what I've seen so far.

GG, these newly introduced so called "entry level" rifles from Savage, Ruger and Mossberg are really great values.
The Edge and the Axis from Savage, the Ruger American and Mossberg's ATR-100 and Predator line are all well built, accurate and best of all very very affordable. What else could you desire from a working firearm?
After observing what 25 years of wear have done on my wood stocked Remington , I appreciate the durability of a synthetic stock.

Took the boys out on the ice today for the afternoon. We caught piles of bluegills! Easily 50-60 between the three of us. Some friends met us out there and we had a great time. Jack said it was his best ice fishing trip ever, so that's all a dad can ask for!!

Fun day!

Took a little trip into the earth today. 800 feet down in 1.25 miles. To say it was steep would be an under statement. Carlsbad Caverns NP. Going on a ranger guided tour in the morning. I will post pictures as soon as possible. I think my knees hurt a little tonight. I did cheat and take the elevator back to the surface.

On a side note we drove in snow until we got within 20 miles of Carlsbad N.M. It did get to about 50 degrees this afternoon.

'Been talking to friends and family down in Ohio. They are just getting pounded with the snow this winter. A kid I went to school with posted a picture of his long driveway on Facebook. The snow is piled up higher than his tractor-mounted snowblower can throw it. He said if they get much more before some of this melts off, they're going to have to rent some equipment, cut a path through the woods parallel to the drivway and scrape down the banks, just so they can throw the snow from the driveway over the top of the pile. Growing up down there, we used to go for a family ride in the spring down towards Steubenville, and Wheeling to see the flooding on the Ohio River Basin. I woud think they're in for a very rough spring.

Gophergunner it has indeed been a cold and snowy winter and I am getting sick of it. I have about a foot of snow in the yard. I've managed to keep the drive plowed out with a 500 Polaris. Only had to be pulled out once and that was the day the Polaris would not start. (-15 and I ran the battery down). Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 40's with up to 2 inches of rain. I believe you can drive down and watch the flooding if you don't have anything else to do.

I was mowing today smile

I don't miss the snow, that's for sure. I remember the winter and flooding of '97 very well. I'm hoping this year isn't like that
