Trying to pick one of the following for a long action but all the websites have different info for there mounting length. I want to be able to push the scope back as far as possible. Fxii 2.5x, fxii 4x, vx2 2-7x33, vx3 1.75-6, vx3 2.5-8. Which will move back the farthest?

There's not a definite answer. Action type, ring width, and choice of base are all factors as well as available eye relief. Possibly the greatest flexibility is with a Weaver/Picatinny one-piece rail as iit allows variable ring placement, but looks out of place on some rifles. Extension rings can help, but also look funky to my eye.

Look at the drawings on the website spec section for the various models and use the measurements to cobble together an idea of the usable tube length and position of the turret. The drawings are not to scale.

If you know someone with one of the models you're looking at, you can eyeball it beside your rifle. As a last resort, I suppose, you can take your setup to a dealer and check it against the scopes in stock. That convenience is one thing that justifies the higher prices they sometimes charge. Finding a local dealer with all those models in stock, particularly the fixed powers, may be a challenge.

If you provide the details of your setup, the folks here may be able to give you an idea of what has worked for them, maybe even pictures.

The rifle is an m70 long action with 1" low talley lightweights. Currently has the 4x but the lop is to long to get a nice view. I need to just order a McMillan edge but.

My choice would be a VX-3 3.5-10x40 CDS for a 1" scope.

For a 30mm, VX-6 2-12x40, which is CDS compatible and you're entitled to a free turret from Leupy.

I also like my scopes mounted pretty far back and these will mount without extension bases/rings.

Again, get out a ruler, measure the current scope, and compare the total tube length and the tube on either side of the turret, and compare it to the spec drawings.

The VX-3 2.5-8 and 1.75-6 have the longest eye relief and the 1.75-6 has a long tube.

Call Talley about ring height. My pre-64 needed med rings for a 3-9X40 VX-II.

The 2.5-8 is short & doesn't leave much fore/aft on a M70 long action, the 1.75-6 is better. Better still is the 3.5-10. I don't know about the fixed power ones since I don't use them.

I did some measurements of scopes for my M70 30-06 and found the FX-2 6x36mm, FX-3 6x42mm, VX-2 3x9, and VX-3 2.5x10 are good to go. I bought a VX-2 3x9 and it worked great. I got a good deal on a 6x42mm later and it works too. YMMV

Recommended scopes mounted in a rearward position. Shorter scopes would need extension base/rings mounted like this.

with vx3 2.5-8x36
with leupold low rings on it and dual dovetail bases
plenty of eye relief and bolt handle clearance and about 3/16ths of an inch clearance between the barrel and objective housing

it comes up fast and I have yet to shoot a deer on anything higher than 2.5 power

I run my scopes at lowest power, only crank up the power if needed for a longer shot. Kill most stuff at low power.

The old Model 8 4x28 fits easy, low as you want it with whatever eye relief you need.

I do like a lower power and not wanting to get into anything higher then the 2.5-8x36 sounds like it has the shortest tube. A few people have said the 1.75-6 has a longer tube. I will have to check at the shop to see if they have any.

Run a fx3 6x42 or a if you want a variable a vx3 3.5-10x40 will fit the longer action better and is still reasonable with the weight.

Don't have any vx6's so can't offer advice there.

I run a fx2 6x36 on my 270 and have it all the way back with no issues but it' a very personal decision as to how far back you want it.

Anybody use a fxii 2.5x scout scope. Wonder how it would work pushed all the way forward? Otherwise might just go with the normal 2.5x or vx3 1.5-5. Local shop has none of um.

The 3x is what I would like but not for $500 when I could get the vx3 for at least $100 less.

I believe Talley makes their lightweight lows or extended low rings. Might want to check on that, I have a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36mm on my 375 Ruger Guide gun and it has a LOP of 13.25" and eye relief is just right for me. With extended front ring turned around would bring eye relief rearward for you. Now I have a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40mm with Talley lightweight standard lows on a Remington 721 300 H&H which is a magnum action, Had to set scope all the way back to get correct eye relief for me and LOP is 13.5".

I made a spreadsheet back in the dimly lit past to figure that out. You gotta subtract the front bell and add the eye relief--so you will get two results as the ER varies from low to high.

A besser answer is the 3-9x40 and bestest the 3.5-10x42

to answer your question: based on low power the 1.75-6 and based on high power, the 2-7

The VX2 3-9x40 is very light, has a larger FOV on 3x than the 3x20 (go figure) and just as much mounting latitude as the 3x20....unless you place the ring over or in front of the objective glass on the 3x20 and I doubt that is a good idea...but open to learning.

All I can say is while the Leupold 2-7 scopes are one of my favorites they tend to be short on L A rifles Leupold needs to add about 1/2 " to the front tube

Just saw that talley offers extended rings that do not hang over anywhere. Does anybody have a pic of these? Looks like there is front extension or both extension?

Not del 70 but it gives you an idea. The extended front ring allows you to move your scope back an extra 3/16 to 1/4 inch and doesn't cover past the rear of the front receiver ring.

I don't know. I just found the pic under "Talley Lightweight extended ring pics" for an example.

I have used DNZ mounts on my M70s. IMO the choice between the Talley lightweights and the DNZ Deadnuts mount is like choosing between an ugly skinny gal and an ugly chunky gal. Let the monkey schitt fight begin.
